He wrote this to commemorate President Atta Mills for several reasons.<\/p>\n Without breaching my Hippocratic Oath, I remember how protective and secretive he was about his health condition. One day when I entered his office at the Osu Christianborg Castle with him from a meeting, Prof. asked, \u201cOmane, I need to go to the US for medicals; what do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n I hesitated a bit.\u00a0\u00a0I surmised that his concern was more about the mincemeat his political opponents would make out of his stay away from Ghana.<\/p>\n And they did. But my answer was one and only one \u2013\u00a0from a professional perspective first and the politics second. \u201cProf., you must go; we will take care of their mischief.\u201d<\/p>\n I also remember his restless and altruistic quest for socio-economic development to secure \u201cA Better Ghana\u201d for all Ghanaians, not just a few privileged citizens.<\/p>\n In doing so, he not only added to the gains of his predecessors but also duly recognized their efforts, in particular, towards making Ghana\u2019s oil dream possible.<\/p>\n In his first State of the Nation Address at the African Democrat, President Atta Mills stated graciously.<\/p>\n \u201cMadam Speaker, Kwame Nkrumah laid the foundation for oil and gas exploitation in Ghana. Jerry John Rawlings created the institutional framework for its exploitation. The oil and gas were struck in commercial quantities during the period of John Agyekum Kufuor. Actual commercial exploitation is beginning in the period of John Evans Atta Mills. In between, others have played their part\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n I, further, remember how he achieved unprecedented growth in the Ghanaian economy (above 14% GDP) in 2011.<\/p>\n Most importantly, this astronomical growth was not only driven by oil revenue.<\/p>\n According to the Ghana Statistical Service, non-oil GDP in 2011 (at constant 2006 prices) was 8.2%.<\/p>\n That is to say, the non-oil sector\u2019s relative contribution was over and above the impact oil made to the unmatched GDP Atta Mills\u2019 NDC administration recorded.<\/p>\n He was placing Ghana on a path to avoid the Dutch disease so that crude oil would not harm Ghana\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n In the health sector, I remember Atta Mills for critically considering emergency health care and distributing 160 new and additional ambulances nationwide to augment health care services.<\/p>\n Additionally, he initiated numerous health, education, communication, and transport policies and infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n The domain of this Great African Democrat\u2019s accomplishments is vast.<\/p>\n At the international level President Barack Obama of the USA duly recognized him for significantly improving Ghana\u2019s democracy; and together with\u00a0Mo Ibrahim, and three others, the Journal of International Affairs at Columbia University classified Atta Mills as one of the “Five Faces of African Innovation and Entrepreneurship.”\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0In Ghana, many Ghanaians loved him and christened him \u2018Asomdwehene\u2019 (King of peace).<\/p>\n In 2014, President Mahama \u2013 who in Atta Mills\u2019 own words was a man, \u201cIn whom he was well pleased\u201d \u2013 led his Cabinet to\u00a0name Ghana\u2019s second Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel,\u00a0after John Atta Mills for ensuring actual production of First Oil in commercial quantities.<\/p>\n After the 2012 elections, we issued commemorative postal stamps to honor Atta Mills on World Post Day. His brother, Dr. Cadman Mills joined me at the headquarters of Ghana Post near the John Evans Atta Mills High Street (also named after him) in remembrance of Atta Mills as \u201c\u2026a humble man who loved\u00a0his country\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n In like manner, the Judicial Council revered his high regard for independence of the judiciary and named Ghana\u2019s most modern Court Complex after him, and so did the University of Ghana name the Law Faculty building after Professors Atta Mills and Akua Kuenyehia, a former Dean.<\/p>\n Content created and supplied by: BATACH (via Opera \n , . , .
