{"id":1140853,"date":"2022-07-03T17:51:44","date_gmt":"2022-07-03T17:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/07\/03\/over-100-countries-request-for-imf-bailout\/"},"modified":"2022-07-03T17:51:44","modified_gmt":"2022-07-03T17:51:44","slug":"over-100-countries-request-for-imf-bailout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/07\/03\/over-100-countries-request-for-imf-bailout\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 100 Countries Request For IMF Bailout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Half of the world including developed countries have approached the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for emergency assistance in terms of loans as a result of the global economic crisis as the world appears to be confronted with recession.<\/p>\n<p>Kristalina Georgieva, IMF\u2019s Managing Director, disclosed this at a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors that half of the world<br \/>approached the Fund for emergency loans to weather the financial crisis sparked by the global coronavirus pandemic, according to a report carried by the CNN Business.<\/p>\n<p>She expressed the readiness of the IMF to use its \u201cfull toolbox and $1 trillion firepower\u201d of lending capacity.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF Managing Director mentioned that at least 10 countries have so far received emergency funding, and half of the remaining countries would receive their requested financial lifelines.<\/p>\n<p>This follows a stark warning the IMF issued that the global economy is on track for the deepest downturn since the 1930s and governments and health officials must work together to prevent an even worse outcome as the world has not seen a recession this bad since the 1930s but the recovery is far from certain.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF head said \u201ceverything is on the table in terms of measures we can take,\u201d and encouraged central banks to \u201cspend as much as you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut keep the receipts,\u201d she added. \u201cWe don\u2019t want accountability and transparency to take a back seat in this crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview with CNBC, the IMF chief acknowledged that the fund has a reputation for imposing tough conditions on countries seeking bailouts.<\/p>\n<p>But this time, \u201cwe are asking for one thing only: Please pay your doctors and nurses, make sure that your health systems are functioning, and that your vulnerable people and first [responders] are protected,\u201d Georgieva told the network.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF said that it expects global GDP will contract by 3% in 2020, a far worse recession than the one that followed the global financial crisis of 2008, and a 180-degree reversal of its previous forecast in January when it was expecting growth of 3.3% this year.<\/p>\n<p>The fund said there is a risk of the recession extending into 2021 if policymakers fail to coordinate a global response to the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Already, the IMF has approved a debt-relief plan for 25 countries battling the coronavirus pandemic that have requested financial assistance as they deal with the novel coronavirus pandemic, IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The countries receiving the grants include Afghanistan, Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 and Pr\u00edncipe, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Tajikistan, Togo and Yemen among others.<\/p>\n<p>The funds will be used \u201cto cover their IMF debt obligations for an initial phase over the next six months and will help them channel more of their scarce financial resources towards vital emergency medical and other relief efforts,\u201d Georgieva said.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF trust responsible for the funds can provide $500 million in \u201cgrant-based debt service relief.\u201d In her statement, Georgieva urged donors \u201cto help us replenish the Trust\u2019s resources and boost further our ability to provide additional debt service relief for a full two years to our poorest member countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Vincent Kubi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- AI CONTENT END 2 -->\n\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Half of the world including developed countries have approached the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for emergency assistance in terms of loans as a result of the global economic crisis as the world appears to be confronted with recession.
