{"id":1133143,"date":"2022-06-24T12:55:53","date_gmt":"2022-06-24T12:55:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/06\/24\/coach-rescues-swimmer-who-fainted-inside-pool-at-world-aquatics-championship\/"},"modified":"2022-06-24T12:55:53","modified_gmt":"2022-06-24T12:55:53","slug":"coach-rescues-swimmer-who-fainted-inside-pool-at-world-aquatics-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/06\/24\/coach-rescues-swimmer-who-fainted-inside-pool-at-world-aquatics-championship\/","title":{"rendered":"Coach rescues swimmer who fainted inside pool at World Aquatics Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"463\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-06-24-at-10.19.10-AM-696x463.jpeg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Coach rescues swimmer who fainted inside pool at World Aquatics Championship\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coach rescues swimmer who fainted inside pool at World Aquatics Championship<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dramatic footage has emerged showing the moment unconscious US synchronised swimmer Anita Alvarez was dragged out of a pool in Budapest after fainting in the water as she finished her routine at the World Championship yesterday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coach\u00a0Andrea Fuentes had to plunge into the water to rescue 25-year-old Alvarez after lifeguards failed to react as she sunk in the pool.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/FV7mYHQXkAAleFCEDITED.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-550933\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fuentes, sensing danger, dived into the pool and pulled Alvarez to the surface before the swimmer was taken away on a stretcher.<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly, it is the second time Fuentes has saved the swimmer after she was filmed diving in and pulling her to safety when she fainted in the pool during an\u00a0Olympics\u00a0qualifying event in\u00a0Barcelona\u00a0last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/FV7mZtKXwAAZtwq-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-550930\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Alvarez regained consciousness soon after being rescued from the Budapest pool, received immediate first aid and is reportedly recovering well.\u00a0Footage of yesterday\u2019s event shows the US swim team celebrating as Alvarez finishes her solo routine before realising something is wrong and moments later, the 25-year-old is seen being dragged from the pool by Fuentes and a male lifeguard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fuentes later revealed Alvarez\u00a0stopped breathing for \u2018at least two minutes\u2019 during the ordeal following her performance in the women\u2019s solo free event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/FV4v7xpXgAQs0kH-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-550934\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI tried to wake her up. Well, I slapped her and opened her jaw. But the truth is that until after we got to the emergency room, she did not breathe for at least two minutes,\u201d Fuentes said during a Spanish-language interview last night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The US coach, who was critical of lifeguards after the near-tragedy, had said last night a decision on whether Alvarez would swim in the free team finals tomorrow would be taken on medical advice.\u00a0But today the 39-year-old mum-of-one said Alvarez was determined not to abandon the World Championships.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/125586322_gettyimages-1241456356.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-550931\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>She told Spanish daily El Mundo: \u201cShe doesn\u2019t want to leave here with the photo of her unconscious at the bottom of the pool.
