Diego Maradona<\/strong><\/p>\n Eight people who took care of soccer legend Diego Maradona will be tried in Argentina courts for homicide, according to a ruling released on Wednesday following an investigation into his November 2020 death due to cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n In the 236-page document seen by Reuters, the judge in charge of the case questioned \u201cthe behaviours \u2013 active or by omission \u2013 of each of the accused which led to and contributed to the realisation of the harmful result.\u201d<\/p>\n The ruling said that eight people including doctors, nurses and a psychologist who cared for Maradona at the time of his death are accused of \u201csimple homicide,\u201d a serious charge that means taking a life with intent.<\/p>\n A medical board appointed to investigate Maradona\u2019s death concluded in 2021 that the soccer star\u2019s medical team acted in an \u201cinappropriate, deficient and reckless manner.\u201d<\/p>\n Maradona was considered one of the greatest soccer players in history, though the diminutive player nicknamed \u201cPelusa\u201d for his long mane of hair and \u201cD10S\u201d as a play on the Spanish word for \u201cGod\u201d using his jersey number, battled drug and alcohol abuse for years.<\/p>\n Mario Baudry, a lawyer for one of Maradona\u2019s sons, told Reuters that the World Cup winner was \u201cin a situation of helplessness\u201d by the time of his death. Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60.<\/p>\n \u201cAs soon as I saw the cause, I said it was homicide. I fought for a long time and here we are, with this stage completed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Argentine prosecutors launched investigations shortly after Maradona\u2019s death at a house near Buenos Aires, including ordering searches of properties of his personal doctor and probing others involved in his care.<\/p>\n The defendants named in the ruling were Maradona\u2019s neurosurgeon and personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Diaz, nurses Gisella Madrid and Ricardo Almiron, their boss Mariano Perroni, and doctors Pedro Di Spagna and Nancy Forlini.<\/p>\n The defendants have denied responsibility for Maradona\u2019s death. The judge said that lawyers for some of them had requested the case be dismissed.<\/p>\n Vadim Mischanchuk, an attorney for Cosachov, said they would appeal the decision, adding the psychiatrist\u2019s area of care had no relation with Maradona\u2019s cause of death.<\/p>\n \u201cA guilty party is being sought at all costs and objectivity is being lost,\u201d the lawyer said.<\/p>\n Reuters could not immediately reach the defendants or the other lawyers for comment.<\/p>\n The crime of \u201csimple homicide\u201d in Argentina usually leads to a sentence of 8 to 25 years in prison, according to the country\u2019s penal code.
