Lack of access and means to obtain sanitary products creates challenges for the girls in the country to regularly attend school and practice sports.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">FIFA at the same time launched the Pilot project for Menstrual Hygiene and Education for Girls Playing football. The project is aimed at tackling challenges girls face during their menstrual cycle. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WSSCUP2022?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WSSCUP2022<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HDQvK43I4d\">pic.twitter.com\/HDQvK43I4d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SSFA Women Football (@SSFAWomen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SSFAWomen\/status\/1497162313547329568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This is where FIFA\u2019s Menstrual Health and Education through Football pilot project in South Sudan comes in. It aims to strengthen the capacity of women\u2019s football at grassroots level and encourage girls\u2019 participation in the sport whilst educating them about menstrual hygiene and providing them with reusable sanitary products.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>As part of this project, a Girls Interschool Tournament took place in May. Girls from 27 primary schools across Juba City came together to participate in an inter-school tournament. This was the second activity in which the Menstrual Health and Education component was incorporated, following the Women\u00b4s Football Cup competition that launched the programme in February 2022.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"BBIkO1q2dDE\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Menstrual Health and Education Through Football in South Sudan\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BBIkO1q2dDE?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI am very excited that this project is happening through SSFA and the support from FIFA. Building women\u2019s football and especially from the grassroots is our priority. We have shifted much of our attention towards building stronger women\u2019s football pathways, particularly from the grassroots,\u201d said SSFA President Augustino Maduot<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very happy to see these little girls showcasing their talents, something most of them never had a chance to experience. I believe with much effort and support, we shall soon see a new era of women\u2019s football in the country,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Following the event, the girls were educated about menstrual hygiene and those already experiencing their cycle were given reusable sanitary pads and taught how to use them.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/FIFA-Women-s-Football-Development-Workshop-South-Sudan\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe menstrual hygiene project is a pilot project that FIFA was kind enough to bring to South Sudan. I believe it is the first of its kind. And yes, it is hugely important for us because if you look at the poverty line in a country like South Sudan, 80-82% of the people in that country are below that line and live on two dollars a day,\u201d explains Shilene Booysen, coach of the country\u2019s women\u2019s national team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project is really eye-opening and gives us a platform to create more ambassadors for the programme, but also to raise awareness of the problem that female athletes and women in general face in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arijana Demirovic, FIFA\u2019s Head of Women\u2019s Football Development, was also pleased with the successful implementation of the project, which not only focuses on girls\u2019 participation in sport but also aims to educate them about menstrual hygiene.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/1655809237_294_FIFA-Women-s-Football-Development-Workshop-South-Sudan\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe are really encouraged to see the success of this project so far and the power that football has to help create a healthier environment for girls and women of South Sudan, providing more opportunities to participate in football activities\u201d, said Demirovic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis pilot project allows the member association to build capacities locally and empower girls to educate themselves, but also become ambassadors in the community to make sure the next generations that follow them can see a clearer pathway within football.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next activity that will encompass the Menstrual Health and Education aspect is the Women\u00b4s Senior League.
