{"id":1115610,"date":"2022-06-09T09:30:09","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T09:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/06\/09\/parliament-wont-sit-on-friday-to-allow-mps-take-part-in-green-ghana-day-exercise-parliament\/"},"modified":"2022-06-09T09:30:09","modified_gmt":"2022-06-09T09:30:09","slug":"parliament-wont-sit-on-friday-to-allow-mps-take-part-in-green-ghana-day-exercise-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/06\/09\/parliament-wont-sit-on-friday-to-allow-mps-take-part-in-green-ghana-day-exercise-parliament\/","title":{"rendered":"Parliament Won\u2019t Sit On Friday To Allow Mps Take Part In Green Ghana Day Exercise | Parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Asiamah Amoako has directed that Parliament will not sit on Friday to enable lawmakers travel to their constituencies to join the Green Ghana Day exercise on that day.<\/p>\n<p>The Green Ghana Day is an exercise introduced by the government as part of efforts to recover the lost forest reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The theme for this year\u2019s exercise is \u201cMobilizing for a Greener Future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>During the launch of the exercise earlier at the\u00a0Accra International Conference Centre, President in his keynote address said that, forests continue to be one of Ghana\u2019s most important resources but regrettably there is a substantial decline of the country\u2019s forest cover.<\/p>\n<p>He called for concerted efforts to combat this menace. The Green Ghana Initiative seeks to create a collective action towards restoration of degraded landscapes in the country, mitigate climate change and inculcate in the youth the values of planting and nurturing trees and their associated benefits, he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing a press conference in Parliament on Wednesday, June 8 regarding the Green Ghana Day exercise scheduled to take place on Friday, June 10, he said \u201cSince 1900, Ghana has lost a whopping 80 per cent of its forest cover and therefore, we have a crisis situation, climate change is reaching a tipping point and Ghana, as a respected member of the international community is contributing its quota to the global efforts at halting climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He further revealed that the Ministry plans to plant 10 million seedlings in reserve compartments and 10 million across the country, in schools, churches, homes, mosques and other public areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to thank the Speaker of Parliament and the Honourable Members of the august House of Parliament for being very supportive and enthusiastic about this year\u2019s Green Ghana Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, as you may be aware, the Speaker has just announced that Parliament will not sit on Friday. This is to enable Members of Parliament travel to their constituencies to lead their constituents in participating in this year\u2019s Green Ghana Day. We want to thank the speaker for this momentous decision.
