After feeling “put aside for years,” Black Stars midfielder Alfred Duncan has decided to retire from international football. He cited this decision as his motivation.

On Saturday, May 28, 2022, his club, Fiorentina, made the announcement that their player will no longer compete for his country in international competitions.

Duncan said in his statement, which was uploaded by the team, that he has been “humiliated,” “discriminated,” and also neglected despite doing his best to warrant a call up to the Black Stars. This is despite the fact that the team released Duncan’s statement.

He continued by saying that because no one had given him the opportunity to make history with the Black Stars, now was as good a moment as any for him to bid farewell.

“The time has come to say goodbye to the national team. My heart is sad because I wanted to write a piece of history with the Ghanaian national team but they NEVER gave me the chance to prove it

“When you are never considered and there is nothing you can do to change the situation, mentally it becomes more difficult. I have been humiliated, discriminated against, and left aside for years even though I have tried to keep the doors open all the time,” the statement said.

In 2012, he made his debut for the Black Stars in a match against Cape Verde. A total of ten matches were played by him.

His most recent match came in 2019, when Ghana competed against South Africa in the qualifiers for the 2021 AFCON. He played for a total of 61 minutes throughout the game.
