Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey is seriously considering switching international allegiance to Ghana after being asked to be left out of England U21’s latest squad.<\/p>\n
The 21-year-old was expected to be selected for the Young Lions’ upcoming four Euro qualifiers against the Czech Republic, Albania, Kosovo, and Slovenia.<\/p>\n
However, he has decided to sit out the matches while deciding whether or not to play for the Black Stars.<\/p>\n
Lamptey, who has two England U21 caps, is of Ghanaian descent and was born in Hillingdon, west London.<\/p>\n
Young Lions boss Lee Carsley revealed: \u201cThere\u2019s an issue over his dual nationality. He\u2019s had an approach. It\u2019s something he\u2019s considering at the minute.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s asked to be left out of the squad for a bit of head space. He\u2019s not switched, it\u2019s not cemented or anything like that.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut he\u2019s had an approach (from Ghana), we have to respect that.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve made it clear how important we see him to us. I know the seniors have as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not something that we\u2019ve given up on. Tariq is fully aware of how important we see him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lamptey has had several “good conversations” with Carsley about the situation, and Carsley believes senior manager Gareth Southgate has also spoken with the Albion right-back.<\/p>\n
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, James Justin, Kyle Walker-Peters, Tino Livramento, and others are among England’s options in this position.<\/p>\n
Carsley added: \u201cI\u2019ve definitely got to give him a bit of space now. We\u2019ve got a squad of players there that are desperate to play for England.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wouldn\u2019t want to leave one out to bring one in that\u2019s unsure, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s fair.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut the opposite to that is Tariq is a big player for us and we see a real future for him within the pathway, so I\u2019ll definitely be going back to him.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe would be a big loss. We do have some really good right-backs but that doesn\u2019t mean we should become blas\u00e9 about our players.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe see Tariq as an important player for not potentially only the senior team but the 21s as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lamptey had a decent campaign, making 30 appearances and recording two assists.<\/p>\n
