{"id":1098667,"date":"2022-05-25T09:55:12","date_gmt":"2022-05-25T09:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/25\/africa-needs-3-trillion-to-reduce-climate-change-vulnerabilities-ofori-atta-economy\/"},"modified":"2022-05-25T09:55:12","modified_gmt":"2022-05-25T09:55:12","slug":"africa-needs-3-trillion-to-reduce-climate-change-vulnerabilities-ofori-atta-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/25\/africa-needs-3-trillion-to-reduce-climate-change-vulnerabilities-ofori-atta-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa Needs $3 Trillion To Reduce Climate Change Vulnerabilities &#8211; Ofori-Atta | Economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the African Development Bank (AfDB), says Africa needs about $3 trillion to enable it reduce climate change vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change vulnerabilities are the degree to which humans, natural organisms and the physical environment are susceptible to, and unable to cope with the adverse effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The vulnerabilities include more frequent and intense drought, storms, heatwaves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and warming oceans, which directly harm animals, destroy the places they live, and wreak havoc on people&#8217;s livelihoods and communities.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ofori-Atta, said: \u201cAfrica now needs close to $3 trillion in additional resources to finance the implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and reduce climate vulnerabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said this at the opening of the 2022 annual meetings of the Board of Governors of AfDB in Accra on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The week-long event is being held on the theme: \u201cAchieving Climate Resilience and a Just Energy Transition for Africa,\u201d and would also feature discussions on addressing the continent\u2019s energy transition challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ofori-Atta, who is also Ghana\u2019s Finance Minister, indicated that the continent needed roughly $66 billion to meet its health financing needs, and $39 billion to improve access to education.<\/p>\n<p>He said this in recognition of the development and financing gap, which the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), pegs at $1.7 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>The continent\u2019s infrastructure financing gap has also widened to approximately $130 billion\u2013$170 billion annually until 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ofori-Atta, said, \u201cGiven the current local and global dynamics, it has become imperative that we vigorously mobilize resources through innovative means, including from the digital space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs worldwide momentum around climate action accelerates, we need our development institutions to guide a pragmatic transition for Africa that balances our developmental aspirations with realistic net-zero targets,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Africa is responsible for under four percent of global emissions but is disproportionately affected by climate change and the actual opportunity cost of meeting COP26 targets.<\/p>\n<p>He said despite the vast opportunities for green investments, Africa attracted less than one percent of global green bond issuances, estimated at $600 billion.<\/p>\n<p>He said only 21 African countries have access to the external capital markets, which is costly, with African countries paying higher interest rates than their peers with similar or worse economic fundamentals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstimates of what may be termed the \u2018African premium\u2019 range from 100 to 260 basis points even after accounting for economic fundamentals,\u201d the Chairperson of AfDB Board of Governors, said.<\/p>\n<p>He then urged AfDB to remain committed to providing competitive financing for its members to close the widening development and financing gap.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cPositioning our Bank to crowd in the needed finance for climate must continue to engage our attention, mainly because the prospects of being left with \u2018stranded assets\u2019 is an emerging concern in the African climate change debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong\/><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"peace_black_text_4\">Source: GNA<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"clear:both\">\n<tr>\n<td><span class=\"peace_red_text_1\">Disclaimer<\/span>: <span class=\"peace_ash_text_1\">Opinions expressed here are those of the writers and do not reflect those of Peacefmonline.com.
