{"id":1093412,"date":"2022-05-20T05:56:58","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T05:56:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/20\/nigeria-considers-joining-ghana-cote-divoire-to-implement-lid-for-cocoa-farmers\/"},"modified":"2022-05-20T05:56:58","modified_gmt":"2022-05-20T05:56:58","slug":"nigeria-considers-joining-ghana-cote-divoire-to-implement-lid-for-cocoa-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/20\/nigeria-considers-joining-ghana-cote-divoire-to-implement-lid-for-cocoa-farmers\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria considers joining Ghana, Cote d\u2019Ivoire to implement LID for cocoa farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\n                                                   Accra, May 19, GNA &#8211; Nigeria has expressed interest in joining Ghana and Cote d\u2019lvoire in implementing a Living Income Differential of $400 on every tonne of cocoa beans sold to enhance farmers\u2019 benefit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/1.21480915.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"kMediaObject\"\/><\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Abdullahi Abubakar, Director for Nigeria\u2019s Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, who led a team to the Ghana Cocoa Board, said the move would help in boosting the income of the small holder cocoa farmers.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The delegation was in the country to meet the officials of Cocobod to understudy the operations of the LID as accrued to small holder cocoa farmers in Ghana.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Mr Abubakar, who read the speech on behalf of Dr Ernest Umakhihe, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said Nigeria\u2019s unregulated and liberalised Cocoa Industry was depriving small holder farmers of yearly revenues as they were unable to collect the LID. \u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The LID system which was established by Cote D\u2019Ivoire and Ghana in 2019 is set to be the Cocoa Markets Organisation of Africa and if fully implemented in the region can be compared to the organisation of petroleum exporting countries where prices of cocoa will be regulated.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">\u201cNigeria being lined up to join the LID system will also guarantee that the premium charged in the $100 billion Chocolate Industry will help in boosting the income of the small holder farmers,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Commenting on the interest, the Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, said some structures ought to be put in place for the LID to work in Nigeria.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">He said while Ghana and Cote d\u2019Ivoire implemented a centralised regulatory system, trading and marketing in Nigeria were done by individual private companies without any centralised regulation.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">\u201cThis makes it difficult for the LID to flow smoothly to the farmers because the LID ought to be given in total farmer.
