{"id":1087088,"date":"2022-05-14T11:52:53","date_gmt":"2022-05-14T11:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/14\/payment-of-taxes-mark-of-patriotism-gra\/"},"modified":"2022-05-14T11:52:53","modified_gmt":"2022-05-14T11:52:53","slug":"payment-of-taxes-mark-of-patriotism-gra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/14\/payment-of-taxes-mark-of-patriotism-gra\/","title":{"rendered":"Payment of taxes, mark of patriotism\u2014GRA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\n                                                   Accra, May 14, GNA \u2014 Madam Julie Essiam, Commissioner, Support Services Division (SSD) of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says Ghana\u2019s vision of weaning itself off donor support will be impossible if citizens refused to pay taxes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/1.21476293.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"kMediaObject\"\/><\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">She said payment of taxes was a mark of patriotism and underscored the need for all citizens to support national development.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">\u201cAs good and patriotic citizens, it is important for us to contribute our quota to national development. The leadership of the country has over the years pushed the agenda for the country to wean itself off donor support. This vision will elude us as a country if the citizens refuse to pay their fair share of taxes,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">She said this when the GRA engaged some Trade Associations on the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) to educate and demystify any misinformation regarding its implementation.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The Trade Associations are the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association, Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association, Ghana Association of Garages, Ghana Association of Electronic Services, Ghana Electrical and Electronic Association and the Ghana National Association of Garment Makers.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">In a speech read on her behalf by Dr Martin Kolbil Yamborigya, Assistant Commissioner, Domestic Tax Revenue Division (DTRD), she said there had been several erroneous information in the public sphere on the levy, hence, the need to continuously educate stakeholders on new policies and initiatives to obtain their support and buy-in.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">She called on the media to help disseminate the right information widely on the subject, adding that GRA was also collaborating with the Information Services Department to intensify education.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The Commissioner urged citizens to continue using mobile money platforms for their various financial transfers as was being done prior to the passage and subsequent implementation of the law.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Madam Abena Osei-Asare, Deputy Minister of Finance, assured Ghanaians that monies collected from the E-levy would be put to good use for the benefit of all.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">She also said Government would render periodic account on proceeds accrued from the levy and its use.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The Deputy Minister said Government would continue to engage citizens and various stakeholders to erase every erroneous notion regarding the E-levy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/1.21476294.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"kMediaObject\"\/><\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Mr Isaac Kobina Amoako, Head, Project Management Unit, GRA, said the E-levy would enhance revenue mobilisation by broadening Ghana\u2019s tax base and widening the tax net to include a large portion of the population that remained untaxed.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">He said it would raise revenue to support entrepreneurship,\u202fyouth employment, provision of digital infrastructure and cyber security, and\u202fprovision of road infrastructure.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Mr Amoako said the E-levy would increase Ghana\u2019s tax-to-Gross domestic product (GDP) ratio from approximately 12.5 per cent in 2021 to 20 per cent by 2024.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The levy would be charged at the rate of 1.50 per cent on transactions such as: mobile money transfers done between accounts on the same electronic money issuer\u202f-\u202fsending money from a mobile money wallet to another individual or entity on the same platform\u2019s mobile money wallet.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Mobile money transfers from an account on one electronic money issuer to a recipient on another electronic money issuer\u202f-\u202fsending money from a mobile money wallet on one platform to another individual\u2019s or entity\u2019s mobile money wallet on another platform.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Transfers from bank accounts to mobile money accounts\u202f-\u202ftransferring money from an individual\u2019s or entity\u2019s bank account to another individual\u2019s or entity\u2019s mobile money wallet.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Deductions would also be made on transfers from mobile money accounts to bank accounts\u202f- transferring money from an individual\u2019s or entity\u2019s mobile money wallet to another individual\u2019s or entity\u2019s bank account.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The levy charges also apply to bank transfers on an instant pay digital platform or application originating from a bank account belonging to an individual subject to a threshold to be determined by the Minister of Finance.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Mr Amoako, who is also a member of the E-levy Technical Committee, noted that all transfers would be affected by the E-Levy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Such transfers include a cumulative transfer of GH\u00a2100.00 a day made by the same person\u202f(the GH\u00a2100.00 threshold is the value of electronic transfers above which the Levy will be applied.)<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Also, no deductions would be made for transfers between accounts owned by the same person; a transfer for the payment of taxes, fees, and charges on the Ghana.Gov system or any other.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The Levy does not apply to specified merchant payments, transfers between principal, agent and master-agent accounts, and electronic clearing of cheques.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Mr Abdul Aziz, representative of the Associations, thanked GRA for the education and pledged their support towards combating misinformation on the levy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The\u202fElectronic Transfer Levy Act, 2022 (Act 1075) was passed by Parliament on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 and assented by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday March 31, 2022.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The Act imposes a levy on all applicable electronic transfers made other than electronic transfers that are\u202fexcluded\u202funder the Act.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Accra, May 14, GNA \u2014 Madam Julie Essiam, Commissioner, Support Services Division (SSD) of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says Ghana\u2019s vision of weaning itself off donor support will be impossible if citizens refused to pay taxes.
