Humans and human ancestors have lived in Africa for more than 5 million years. The name Africa came into Western use through the Romans, who used the name Africa terra \u2014 &#8220;land of the Afri&#8221; (plural, or &#8220;Afer&#8221; singular) \u2014 for the northern part of the continent, as the province of Africa with its capital Carthage.<\/p>\n<p>The word Africa was initiated by the Europeans and came into Western use through the Romans after the three Punic battles (264 BC to 146 BC) led by Publius Cornelius Scipio after general Hannibal Barca let him win the battle of Zama in the second Punic War. The Romans discovered a land opposite the Mediterranean and named it after the Berber tribe residing within the Carnage area, presently referred to as Tunisia.
