{"id":1076419,"date":"2022-05-04T20:41:40","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T20:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/04\/npp-reacts-to-world-press-freedom-ranking\/"},"modified":"2022-05-04T20:41:40","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T20:41:40","slug":"npp-reacts-to-world-press-freedom-ranking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/04\/npp-reacts-to-world-press-freedom-ranking\/","title":{"rendered":"NPP reacts to World Press Freedom ranking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Yaw-Aboabeng-Asamoah-2-696x522-696x522.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Yaw-Aboabeng-Asamoa-2-696x522.jpg\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yaw Buaben Asamoa, NPP Director of Communications<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned portions of the 2022 World Press Freedom Index which tagged the Akufo-Addo administration as\u00a0\u201cintolerant of criticism from citizens and the media\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The party argued that, in contrast, the media under the NPP is the freest ever.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Director of Communications of the party, Yaw Boaben Asamoa noted that the party\u2019s contribution to the growth of the media under the Fourth Republic is rather exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NPP believes Ghana\u2019S media is the freest ever and that its contribution to media growth are unparalleled in the Fourth Republic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Buaben Asamoa also highlighted some contributions to media freedom by the party to debunk recent reports on government\u2019s alleged aversion to free speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn sum, NPP decriminalised speech, supported infrastructure and training with the International Press Centre and support funds and improved spectrum allocations and regulatory oversight,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in its 2022 Press Freedom Index noted that journalists in Ghana have in recent years experienced \u201cgrowing pressures\u201d from the government in their line of duty.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, this has led journalists in the country to \u201cincreasingly resort to self-censorship\u201d in order to protect their jobs and security.<\/p>\n<p>The report also bewailed the safety of journalists in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>But the NPP, during its press conference, questioned the validity and authenticity of such claims by the RSF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent reports both internal and external, hyperbolically declaiming the supposed laws of media freedoms in Ghana are painting and playing up a picture of systematic harassment against free speech. But is it truly the case and does mainstream media and civil society organisations experience that in their daily lives and activities?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, is free speech limitless and can it be mischievously used as an instrument to foster instability?
