The Executive Director of Africa Educational Watch, Mr. Kofi Asare has asserted that the very government who passed the Right to Information Law is not fully prepared to comply with it’s provisions.<\/p>\n

In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, 4th May 2022, he wrote;<\/p>\n

“The passage of the Right To Information (RTI) law\u00a0to improve the accountability work of journalists has also turned out to be another fiasco.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The very government that passed the law is apparently not prepared to fully comply with its provisions. Journalists are still going to court to demand simple public contracts funded by the tax payer, while the very ministers who sat in parliament to pass the RTI law continue to refuse RTI requests.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

We are always too busy hiding something from the citizenry and journalists, and succeeded in creating a false impression that governments must run like a secret society to be successful.\u00a0What at all are we hiding?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

It appears we were just not ready for a full bouquet democracy in 1992. We only fell in love with the aspect of executive power and the concomitant edibilities\u00a0of representation. That\u2019s all!<\/p>\n

We have always hated the accountability bit.\u00a0We must repent from opacity and embrace the culture of open governance and RTI. We can do better! “.<\/p>\n

The comments of Mr. Kofi Asare comes as a background to the latest Press Freedom Ranking released. According to the release, Ghana has moved to 60th position from it’s 30th position in 2021.<\/p>\n
