ONCE again, armed with a\u00a03Music Awards\u00a0Artiste of the Year title and nine nominations from the\u00a0Vodafone Ghana Awards(VGMA), many are those who believe wrestling the ultimate\u00a0VGMA\u00a0prize from his competitors this year is a done deal for KiDi.<\/p>\n
But the Lynx Entertainment signee is not allowing the award and nine nods get to his head because this year, he is open-minded about grabbing the ultimate prize.<\/p>\n
Last year, he went into same battle armed with same weapons\u20143Music Awards Artiste of the Year award and nine VGMA nominations and was heavily tipped to win but was defeated by Gospel artiste Diana Hamilton who went home smiling with the spoils.<\/p>\n
That night, he spurred his fans on with \u2018I will be back\u2019 each time he mounted the stage to pick an award(four in all) but lovers of the Enjoyment hitmaker were crestfallen at the end of the night, venting their spleen on social media when he missed it.<\/p>\n
In a chat with the\u00a0Graphic , KiDi mentioned that he\u2019s read and heard comments and suggestions that presupposed winning the VGMA ultimate award was a done deal after annexing that of\u00a03Music Awards\u00a0last month.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no connection between the two award schemes to make me the favourite nominee. Awards can go any way just as it happened last year so this time around, I have decided to be open-minded about the outcome. Expectations were high last year, especially when I won Artiste of the Year for\u00a03Music Awards.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy God\u2019s grace, I won\u00a03Music Awards\u00a0Artiste of the Year again but that is not a guarantee that I will take home the\u00a0VGMA\u00a0Artiste of the Year. I only hope and pray that my fans will keep voting for me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
KiDi had nine\u00a0VGMA\u00a0nominations last year and has same this year in the categories of Afrobeats\/Afro Pop Artiste of the Year, Best Afrobeats Song of the Year, Video of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Reggae\/Dancehall Song of the Year, Male Vocal Performance of the Year, International Collaboration of the Year, Most Popular Song of the Year and Artiste of the Year, with the Golden Boy album which has the hit song\u00a0Touch It.<\/p>\n
As at Saturday, April 23, KiDi\u2019s\u00a0Touch It\u00a0had over 200 million streams with\u00a0YouTube\u00a0and\u00a0Spotify\u00a0recording 20,708,937 and 37,444,321 respectively.\u00a0Apple \u00a0;8,167,653 and\u00a0TikTok\u00a0making an enviable figure of 146,300,000.<\/p>\n
This record in the year under review possibly places KiDi\u2019s chances above his competitors in this year\u2019s\u00a0VGMA\u00a0Artiste of the Year\u2014Black Sherif, Joe Mettle, Sarkodie and Kuami Eugene.<\/p>\n
Touching on the enviable feat\u00a0Touch It\u00a0has achieved, KiDi told the\u00a0Graphic \u00a0that was not a guarantee he would emerge winner on the night.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think everybody who has been nominated deserves to win and anybody could win so as I said earlier, I\u2019m just going into it with an open mind. If I win it, I will be super excited but if I don\u2019t, life still goes on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
KiDi also disclosed\u00a0Touch It\u00a0had been his most successful song considering his humble beginnings, adding \u201c I\u2019m building something great for myself so that in future,\u00a0Touch It\u00a0will probably not be counted among KiDi\u2019s top 10 big hits since bigger hits are coming. All the same, I\u2019m really grateful\u201d.<\/p>\n
On how he sees the progress of Ghanaian music, the old student of the Accra Academy is very optimistic of its growth, particularly with the right investors.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur music industry is growing and we are getting there bit by bit, we might not be moving as fast as some other African countries but we are going, moving forward and still growing as an industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cNevertheless, music business is not just about beautiful music, it\u2019s not just about the music itself, there\u2019s a whole lot of real business behind the music that propels and pushes the music to go where it is supposed to go,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
