{"id":1075052,"date":"2022-05-03T18:49:07","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T18:49:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/03\/use-your-brains-john-kumah-clashes-with-sam-george-over-tithe\/"},"modified":"2022-05-03T18:49:07","modified_gmt":"2022-05-03T18:49:07","slug":"use-your-brains-john-kumah-clashes-with-sam-george-over-tithe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/03\/use-your-brains-john-kumah-clashes-with-sam-george-over-tithe\/","title":{"rendered":"Use your brains \u2013 John Kumah clashes with Sam George over tithe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/sddefault-4.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Sam George\"\/><\/div>\n<p>As Ghanaians struggle to come to terms with the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), many have questioned whether there will ever be a consensus between government and the opposition over its need.<\/p>\n<p>On May 1, the government went ahead with the implementation of the 1.50% tax on electronic transactions, which has been met with a myriad of fierce criticisms over illegitimate deductions, while others describe it as outrightly insensitive.<\/p>\n<p>However, the discourse has taken a rather ugly turn on Twitter when two legislators engaged in a heated exchange over some exemptions in the E-Levy law.<\/p>\n<p>This acrimony between both sides was glaring from the jump.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>But the latest incident was caused by a comment by the Telecommunications Chamber CEO, Kenneth Ashigbe, who asserted on Joy FM that the deductions affected some transactions  the payment of church tithes.<\/p>\n<p>Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament, Sam George, who had been of firm opposition to the initiative, felt he had been vindicated by this comment.<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet, he told Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, that \u201csquare pegs have no place in round holes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we are talking IT deployment, kindly do us a favour and keep quiet. You make more sense that way,\u201d he wrote on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>But the Deputy Finance Minister would have none of that as tempers continued to flare.<\/p>\n<p>In a sharp rebuttal, he took on the NDC MP, saying \u201cyou have brains, use them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether E-levy affects tithe, or not is not an issue of IT deployment, it is common sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He further argued that Mr George was deliberately peddling falsehood \u201cbecause we are not taxing people for paying tithe, offering and Zakat.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/samgeorgegh?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@samgeorgegh<\/a> you are a member of Perez Chapel, should you decide to pay your tithe you will use their momo number(ID 443765) which is a merchant number. Again, most Faith Based Organizations make use of merchant momo numbers, which are exempted from the E-levy, which you know; so, why this hypocrisy from you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All these he believes smack of unpatriotism on the part of Sam George.<\/p>\n<p>But the NDC MP would still not take this lying. He returned on Tuesday morning with a scathing jibe at the Mr Kumah saying; \u201cI do have brains.
