{"id":1074496,"date":"2022-05-03T09:41:56","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T09:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/03\/russia-handed-further-sanctions-by-uefa-amid-ukraine-invasion\/"},"modified":"2022-05-03T09:41:56","modified_gmt":"2022-05-03T09:41:56","slug":"russia-handed-further-sanctions-by-uefa-amid-ukraine-invasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/05\/03\/russia-handed-further-sanctions-by-uefa-amid-ukraine-invasion\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia handed further sanctions by Uefa amid Ukraine invasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image_2022-05-03_085028157-696x392.png\"   alt=\"BBC\" title=\"BBC\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">There have been shows of support for Ukraine at football matches since Russia launched its invasion of the country in February<br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Russia have been barred from competing in this summer\u2019s women\u2019s Euro 2022, while Russian clubs will also be banned from Uefa competitions next season, says Europe\u2019s football governing body.<\/p>\n<p>Uefa has announced that Russia\u2019s bid to host the men\u2019s Euro 2028 or Euro 2032 tournaments is now ineligible too.<\/p>\n<p>The sanctions come amid Russia\u2019s continued invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Russian clubs and national teams were suspended by Fifa and Uefa \u201cuntil further notice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Uefa announced that Portugal \u2013 who lost to Russia in the play-offs \u2013 will replace them at Euro 2022, which takes place in July.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s women\u2019s national team will also no longer compete in European qualification for the 2023 World Cup, while the men\u2019s side is barred from the 2022-23 Nations League.<\/p>\n<p>They will automatically be ranked fourth in group two of League B, meaning they will be relegated at the end of the group phase.<\/p>\n<p>The ban imposed on clubs means there will be no Russian teams in the men\u2019s and women\u2019s Champions League, Europa League, or Europa Conference League during the 2022-23 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Uefa confirmed Russia had declared an interest in hosting Euro 2028 \u2013 as well as the UK and Ireland, and Turkey \u2013 and the 2032 edition.<\/p>\n<p>UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Russia\u2019s interest was\u00a0\u201cbeyond satire\u201d and \u201cbeyond comprehension\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Uefa said the bid was ineligible in accordance with article 16.02 of the Bid Regulations, which states that \u201ceach bidder shall ensure that it does not act in a manner that could bring Uefa, any other bidder, the bidding procedure or European football into disrepute\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Uefa\u2019s latest sanctions also ban Russia from the 2021-23 European Under-21 Championship, as well as youth and futsal competitions.<\/p>\n<p>An updated qualifying process for the Champions League has been published, which shows benefits for Scottish teams.<\/p>\n<p>The Premiership champions will go directly into the competition\u2019s group stages, while the second-placed side will now go into the third round of qualifying rather than the second.<\/p>\n<p>            <!--  [embed]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=videoseries[\/embed]<!--\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>--><\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"CjXf67n46hg\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Adom TV News (2-5-22)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CjXf67n46hg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There have been shows of support for Ukraine at football matches since Russia launched its invasion of the country in February Russia have been barred from competing in this summer\u2019s women\u2019s Euro 2022, while Russian clubs will also be banned from Uefa competitions next season, says Europe\u2019s football governing body.
