Economist Prof Stephen Adey called on the government to fire all striking members of the Association of Civil Servants and Local Governments of Ghana (CLOGSAG).<\/p>\n
According to him, the club’s request for a neutrality allowance is unacceptable and unethical.<\/p>\n
“This is the worst thing I can imagine being someone who has worked in the public sector for 35 years. I can’t imagine that.<\/p>\n
“These are people who need to be laid off and they can apply [again] or stay at home and I guarantee Ghana will be better off,” he said.<\/p>\n
Workers abandoned their equipment about a week ago to protest the controversial nonpayment of the neutrality allowance.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the National Labor Commission (NLC) gave the association two days to resolve its issues with the government.<\/p>\n
But before that deadline, Professor Adey of JoyNews made it clear earlier that the government should replace them with the military in hopes of firing them permanently.<\/p>\n
“If I were the government, I would shut it down and then call the military to deal with the emergency,” he said.<\/p>\n
Although the government agreed to the officials’ demands, The Economist insisted the move would amount to bribery.<\/p>\n
“They acted like I was asking for my share of the meat.” I don’t think they can walk around with Ghanaians to say they should be paid anything at all. And the government is wrong.<\/p>\n
“We are in a national crisis and life is difficult, I have no doubt about that. But for the government to agree to a payment is a bribe.”<\/p>\n
Prof Adey is the last known person to reject the CLOGSAG application.<\/p>\n
Since it became public knowledge that officials need bonuses for being neutral, many Ghanaians have criticized the idea.<\/p>\n
Prominent among them was IMANI-Africa President Franklin Kujo, who called it a fraudulent arrangement that should be overturned.<\/p>\n
Emmanuel Aquitai, executive director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), said it was unethical for officials to demand such bonuses.<\/p>\n
He also recommended that any civil servant interested in politics should resign.<\/p>\n
