{"id":1065585,"date":"2022-04-24T16:16:02","date_gmt":"2022-04-24T16:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/04\/24\/manhyia-south-npp-chairmanship-race-ofori-atta-to-run-unopposed-elections\/"},"modified":"2022-04-24T16:16:02","modified_gmt":"2022-04-24T16:16:02","slug":"manhyia-south-npp-chairmanship-race-ofori-atta-to-run-unopposed-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/04\/24\/manhyia-south-npp-chairmanship-race-ofori-atta-to-run-unopposed-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Manhyia South NPP Chairmanship Race: Ofori Atta To Run Unopposed | Elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Election Committee of Manhyia South Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has disqualified a Civil Servant working with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) from contesting for the constituency chairmanship position.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Owusu Sekyere who works as a Technician Engineer at the KMA filed to contest for the position but was disqualified following a petition filed by the\u00a0 Ashanti Regional First Vice Chairman of the NPP, Kwabena Nsenkyire. <br \/>\u00a0<br \/>This allows his main contender, Richard Adjei Mensah Ofori Atta, popularly known as \u2018Tom Tom\u2019 to go unopposed in the constituency elections in Manhyia South.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><strong>Petition<\/strong> <br \/>\u00a0<br \/>In his petition to the Chairman of the Constituency Elections Committee, Kwabena Nsenkyire said\u00a0 Owusu Sekyere fell within Civil Service regulations and state laws that barred Civil Servants from engaging in active politics  holding party positions.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThat the neutrality principle of the Civil Service embedded in the laws of this state precludes any civil servant from partaking in partisan politics except he or she resigns.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0&#8220;That Owusu Sekyere is still at post and currently on strike as a member of CLOSSAG. I, therefore, pray that your committee disqualifies him on the grounds aforementioned, \u201d the petition said.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><strong>Constitutional Provision<\/strong> <br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The Election Committee report stated that, per the 1992 Constitution, Owusu Sekyere who is a Civil Servant is proscribed from contesting for a political position.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThe Applicant is a worker at Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly as a Technician Engineer.\u00a0 He is a Civil Servant.
