One throwback click is making former fans sick to their stomach as they watch Jim Bob instruct Jessa on how to kiss.<\/p>\n

Recently, Without A Crystal Ball shared a series of throwback clips, but this one stood out.<\/p>\n

There, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar stand with Jessa and her then-fiance, Ben Seewald.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me show y\u2019all the best way to kiss here,\u201d Jim Bob says in the 19 Kids And Counting<\/em> clip.<\/p>\n

\"Jessa<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n
\u201cIf you kiss straight on, your noses hit each other,\u201d Jim Bob warns.<\/p>\n

\n
\u201cSo you have to turn one way,\u201d he tells Ben.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd,\u201d Jim Bob continues, \u201cshe turns the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, he demonstrates.<\/p>\n

Jim Bob kisses Michelle, performing the kiss that he just described.<\/p>\n

\u201cY\u2019all are so cute,\u201d Jessa praises, holding hands with Ben \u2014 the most intimate contact that they are permitted.<\/p>\n

Viewers, however, find all of this less than cute.<\/p>\n

Part of it is simply that Jim Bob is well known to be a bad person \u2014 something that more people understand now than they did when this clip aired.<\/p>\n

When you dislike someone for morally righteous reasons, it\u2019s hard to see anything that they do as \u201ccute.\u201d<\/p>\n

But reactions to Jim Bob\u2019s lesson to Jessa were over more than that.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisturbing,\u201d one commenter labeled the clip.<\/p>\n

Another wrote: \u201cI seriously can\u2019t stomach Jim Bob!\u201d<\/p>\n

It is only natural to recoil from uncomfortable on-screen moments.<\/p>\n

But even as we do that, we can look at the underlying significance of this scene \u2014 why it really makes us uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

Most parents \u2014 parents who are not in a cult \u2014 do not have to do anything of the sort of their children.<\/p>\n

A parent of a much younger child might normally answer some simple questions about kissing, from mechanics to why people do it.<\/p>\n

(I mean, plenty of kids go \u201ceww, why would someone do that?\u201d and get honest answers from their parents)<\/p>\n

But Jessa was an engaged woman at this point and an adult.<\/p>\n

Normal human milestones \u2014 not universal ones, but normal ones \u2014 like having a first kiss were denied to her by her parents and their toxic cult.<\/p>\n

Jessa did not grow up being treated as a person, but as Jim Bob\u2019s property, so she was not permitted to develop as a person \u2014 only as a future wife.<\/p>\n

This is not unique to the Duggars. Other extreme fundamentalist factions also deny their children normal lives and healthy development.<\/p>\n

With other, better parents, Jessa could have had first kisses, first loves, heartbreaks, and made her own choices. Maybe she would not, at 29, be a mom.<\/p>\n

Instead, her whole life was laid out before her, and she needed to be coached on kissing so that she and Ben didn\u2019t humiliate themselves at the altar on their wedding day.<\/p>\n
