{"id":1047392,"date":"2022-04-06T18:27:44","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T18:27:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/04\/06\/russia-withdraws-appeal-over-fifa-ban\/"},"modified":"2022-04-06T18:27:44","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T18:27:44","slug":"russia-withdraws-appeal-over-fifa-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/04\/06\/russia-withdraws-appeal-over-fifa-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia withdraws appeal over Fifa ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"385\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/russia-211114-foul-g-1050-696x385.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"russia-211114-foul-g-1050\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday said the Football Union of Russia (FUR) had withdrawn its appeal against football\u2019s world governing body Fifa as well as the Polish, Swedish and Czech Republic Football Associations.<\/p>\n<p>Fifa and European governing body Uefa decided together that all Russian teams, whether national or club sides, would be suspended from participation in their competitions until further notice after Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Russia were set to host Poland in a World Cup qualifying playoff on 24 March but Fifa had said that Poland would be given a bye to the final of their path in the playoffs to play either Sweden or the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<p>Sport\u2019s highest court said in a statement that the procedure would be terminated shortly. It added a panel of arbitrators was currently being constituted and no procedural calendar had been established yet.<\/p>\n<p>Russia, which calls its actions in Ukraine a \u201cspecial military operation\u201d, has also filed appeals seeking annulment of its bans from international gymnastics, rugby, rowing, and skating, CAS said.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Russia\u2019s hopes of competing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar were effectively ended after CAS rejected a request from the FUR to freeze Fifa\u2019s suspension while their appeal was being heard.<\/p>\n<p>Several national football associations announced they would not play against Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine, including those of Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<p>Poland went on to beat Sweden in their playoff match to qualify for the World Cup finals, which begin in November.<\/p>\n<p>CAS had also upheld Uefa\u2019s ban on Russian teams taking part in its competitions for the duration of its proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>            <!--  [embed]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=videoseries[\/embed]<!--\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>--><\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"I1eD6P9nD6M\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Adom Kasiebo Tau on Adom TV at 12: 00 (31-3-22)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I1eD6P9nD6M?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday said the Football Union of Russia (FUR) had withdrawn its appeal against football\u2019s world governing body Fifa as well as the Polish, Swedish and Czech Republic Football Associations.
