{"id":1047119,"date":"2022-04-06T14:47:09","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T14:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/04\/06\/govt-begins-nationwide-clampdown-on-quarry-encroachment\/"},"modified":"2022-04-06T14:47:09","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T14:47:09","slug":"govt-begins-nationwide-clampdown-on-quarry-encroachment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/04\/06\/govt-begins-nationwide-clampdown-on-quarry-encroachment\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov&#8217;t begins nationwide clampdown on quarry encroachment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\n                                                   Accra, April 6, GNA &#8211; The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, says the Ministry has begun a nationwide clampdown on encroachment on quarry sites.<\/p>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1.21450019.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"kMediaObject\"\/><\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Speaking during a media interview in Accra on Wednesday, Mr Jinapor said the Ministry had deployed a multi-stakeholder team, comprising security personnel and regulatory agencies, to stop illegal human settlements and other activities within quarry concessions.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The exercise formed part of a gamut of measures the Government is rolling out to protect the country&#8217;s quarry sector from imminent collapse.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The Minister said given the critical role the quarry industry played in national development, the\u202flack of respect for regulations relating to quarry operations would no longer be countenanced.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">He raised concerns about the country&#8217;s  risk of importing stones and other quarry products in the next 10 years if nothing was done to halt encroachment on quarry concessions.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">The Minerals and Mining Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2177) states that a manager of a quarry site shall ensure that for any explosion, there is 500 metres minimum safety distance between a blast and a person near the blast site&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">Mr Jinapor said the Ministry was working on a proposal for quarries to be exempted from the list of minerals that needed ratification for their licenses to be valid.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">He said an initiative had been rolled out by the Government through the Minerals Income Investment Fund to support quarry operations and entrepreneurs in the sector to boost their operations.<\/div>\n<div class=\"kMultiLine\">As part of measures to rake in the requisite revenues from the quarries, an inter-agency taskforce had been formed to perform that special role, the Minister said.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Accra, April 6, GNA &#8211; The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, says the Ministry has begun a nationwide clampdown on encroachment on quarry sites.
