{"id":1038515,"date":"2022-03-29T16:57:17","date_gmt":"2022-03-29T16:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/03\/29\/nigeria-host-ghana-in-a-decisive-clash-in-abuja-today\/"},"modified":"2022-03-29T16:57:17","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T16:57:17","slug":"nigeria-host-ghana-in-a-decisive-clash-in-abuja-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/03\/29\/nigeria-host-ghana-in-a-decisive-clash-in-abuja-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria host Ghana in a decisive clash in Abuja today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"521\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/FOur_CNXEAEEtJS-696x521.jpg\"   alt=\"Black Stars players\" title=\"Black Stars players\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Black Stars players<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>A mammoth clash looms as Nigeria host arch-rivals Ghana in the second leg of the 2022 World Cup playoff on Tuesday with the result deciding which side qualifies for the competition to be played in Qatar later this year.<\/p>\n<p>The West African rivals face off at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja in what is the decider between the two sides after the first leg failed to produce a result.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Black Stars<\/em>\u00a0were held to a goalless draw in Friday\u2019s match at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Kumasi which left the return encounter delicately poised.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides had good chances of winning the game but the two goalkeepers Joojo Wallocot and Francis Uzoho of Ghana and Nigeria respectively, were in top form to prevent the opponent from breaking the deadlock.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>Ghanaian youngsters Felix Afena-Gyan, Abdul Fatawu\u00a0Issahaku and Mohammed Kudus were all denied by Uzoho\u2019s heroics, while Wallocot pulled off an astonishing save to deny Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/fajhlwtf2360vayfkweu.jpg\" alt=\"Nigeria players warm up during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Afcon Finals Nigeria Training in Garoua, Cameroon on 21 January 2022\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Nigeria must win their match against Ghana in Abuja on Tuesday to be able to qualify for the World Cup which would be their fourth successive appearance at the global tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen admits they must be at their best level to be able to defeat the Black Stars even though they would be playing at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGhana were on top of their game in the first leg but they didn\u2019t have any clear-cut chances \u2013 but we had two clear-cut chances,\u201d Eguavoen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGhana are not pushovers, they have a lot of talents. We will keep respecting them and I\u2019m very sure the Ghana team will give us a lot of respect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to win the first leg but if we couldn\u2019t win I would have settled for a draw and that\u2019s exactly what happened. Our organisation was very good, we combined well in all the lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we didn\u2019t react quickly, so that\u2019s something we have to work on because we cannot allow the Ghanaian players freedom on the ball,\u201d Eguavoen added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ifmwetirt4qnsbutuygn.jpg\" alt=\"Ghana GFA Image\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The Black Stars, on the other hand, need at least a scoring draw to be able to advance to the World Cup, completely transforming the recent fortunes of the Black Stars.<\/p>\n<p>This follows their unimpressive showing at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations last month where they crashed out at the group stage without winning a match.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, former international winger Otto Addo was appointed as the interim coach to take over from Milovan Rajevac who was sacked following the tournament in Cameroon.<\/p>\n<p>Addo, who is part of the technical team of German side Borussia Dortmund, says the Black Stars want to win the match in Abuja instead of going for a draw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe result doesn\u2019t change anything.
