{"id":1034058,"date":"2022-03-25T11:49:42","date_gmt":"2022-03-25T11:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/03\/25\/shisha-other-substances-predisposing-ghanaians-to-tuberculosis-ghana-health-service\/"},"modified":"2022-03-25T11:49:42","modified_gmt":"2022-03-25T11:49:42","slug":"shisha-other-substances-predisposing-ghanaians-to-tuberculosis-ghana-health-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/03\/25\/shisha-other-substances-predisposing-ghanaians-to-tuberculosis-ghana-health-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Shisha, other substances predisposing Ghanaians to Tuberculosis \u2013 Ghana Health Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"457\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Shisha-Copy-696x457.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Shisha (Copy)\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The Ghana Health Service (GHS) says it is concerned about the acceptance and widespread smoking of shisha in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Service says it has observed an increase in smoking of tobacco, especially Shisha, which appears to be widely accepted in the Ghanaian society.<\/p>\n<p>There is a misconception that shishas are not as harmful as cigarettes, a claim the British Heart Foundation has discredited.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Foundation, an hour-long shisha session can be the equivalent of smoking more than 100 cigarette sticks.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>This was further established in the World Health Organisation (WHO)\u2019s 2015 advisory note.<\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the studies to date indicate that during a typical waterpipe use session, the user will draw large doses of toxicants (ranging from less than one to tens of cigarette equivalents).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese toxicants have been linked to addiction, heart and lung diseases, and cancer in cigarette smokers and can result in similar outcomes in waterpipe users if these toxicants are absorbed in the body in appreciable amounts,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, shisha tobacco contains cigarette tobacco; so, like cigarettes, it contains nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide and heavy metals such as arsenic and lead.<\/p>\n<p>The Ghana Health Service is worried that consumption of the substance is adding to the many factors that predisposes Ghanaians to the deadly tuberculosis disease.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with JoyNews, the Greater Accra Regional TB Coordinator for the Service, Dr Farida Abdulai, said a study must be conducted to understand the extent of damage Shisha causes to persons who patronise it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now, not much research has been done into Shisha and since we have a very good academic community in Ghana, we need them to conduct research into it, and letting us know the risks of smoking shisha are.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Dr-Farida-Abdulai-GHS.jpg\" alt=\"Shisha, other substances predisposing Ghanaians to Tuberculosis \u2013 Ghana Health Service\" class=\"wp-image-10032048917\" title=\"Shisha, other substances predisposing Ghanaians to Tuberculosis \u2013 Ghana Health Service\"\/><figcaption>Dr Farida Abdulai is the Greater Accra Regional TB Coordinator for the Ghana Health Service (GHS)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYoung people are very adventurous, they want to try everything.
