Elon Musk<\/strong>\u00a0has come through on his promise to\u00a0send Jeff Bezos a silver medal<\/strong>\u00a0now that the Tesla CEO has surpassed the Amazon founder to become the world\u2019s richest person.<\/p>\n

Musk couldn\u2019t help himself from chiming in on Twitter after\u00a0Bezos\u00a0<\/strong>posted a message about overcoming adversity.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen and be open, but don\u2019t let anybody tell you who you are. This was just one of the many stories telling us all the ways we were going to fail,\u201d Bezos tweeted alongside an image of Barron\u2019s cover story from 1999 calling Bezos \u201cjust another middleman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, Amazon is one of the world\u2019s most successful companies and has revolutionized two entirely different industries,\u201d Bezos added in the tweet.<\/p>\n

Shortly after midnight, Musk responded with a silver medal emoji, something Musk had promised to send to the Amazon founder now that Musk is worth almost $30 billion more than Bezos.<\/p>\n

The tweet came after the gap between the world\u2019s two richest men continued to widen last week, thanks in part to the new $100.3 billion\u00a0valuations of Musk\u2019s SpaceX<\/strong>. Most of his wealth is still tied to Tesla\u2019s stock price.<\/p>\n

Musk now boasts a net worth of $222 billion while Bezos\u2019 remains at $191 billion,\u00a0according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Last month, Musk warned that the tease would be coming.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sending a giant statue of the digit \u20182\u2019 to Jeffrey B., along with a silver medal,\u201d Musk said in an\u00a0email to Forbes.<\/p>\n

The tweet is the latest in an increasingly heated public spat between the world\u2019s two richest men.<\/p>\n

In addition to dueling for the title of world\u2019s richest person, Musk and Bezos have\u00a0clashed over their space ambitions.<\/p>\n

This summer, Bezos\u00a0flew to suborbital space\u00a0on a 10-minute, widely watched launch\u00a0with his company Blue Origin.<\/p>\n

Musk has criticized Blue Origin \u2014 and other rival Virgin Galactic \u2014 for investing so much in suborbital launches, which he says pale in comparison to the challenges of reaching orbit.<\/p>\n

Jeffrey Bezos filed an official complaint with the Federal Communications Commission urging them to reject Musk\u2019s plan to launch satellites into orbit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

While Musk himself hasn\u2019t yet traveled to space, SpaceX recently\u00a0launched four civilian astronauts<\/strong>\u00a0into space for a three-day trip and successfully returned them to Earth\u00a0\u2014 the first mission of its kind.<\/p>\n

Behind the scenes, the two companies have been in a multi-year contest for US government contracts.<\/p>\n

In April, NASA\u00a0awarded\u00a0a $2.9 billion contract to SpaceX, passing up on a bid by Blue Origin.<\/p>\n

And last month, Bezos\u2019 company sued the space agency, alleging that it unfairly awarded the contract to Musk\u2019s firm.<\/p>\n

Musk responded by saying that Bezos\u2019 Blue Origin should spend more time designing and building rockets and less time suing SpaceX.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf lobbying [and] lawyers could get [you] to orbit, Bezos would be on Pluto [right now],\u201d Musk wrote in a Twitter reply.<\/p>\n

Blue Origin, meanwhile, has released infographics in recent weeks that call SpaceX\u2019s Starship rocket dangerous and point out it is \u201ca launch vehicle that has never flown to orbit and is still being designed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Separately, Bezos-owned Amazon has\u00a0filed a complaint<\/strong>\u00a0against SpaceX with the Federal Communications Commission, urging the regulator to\u00a0reject the company\u2019s plan<\/strong>\u00a0to launch more satellites\u00a0as\u00a0part of its\u00a0satellite internet business<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In return, Musk publicly mocked Bezos, who stepped down from his position as CEO of Amazon this summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cTurns out Besos [sic] retired in order to pursue a full-time job filing lawsuits against SpaceX\u2026\u201d\u00a0Musk\u00a0wrote\u00a0on Twitter<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in August \u2014 misspelling Bezos\u2019 name, instead writing the Spanish word for \u201ckisses.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Bezos\u2019 part, he has mocked\u00a0plans to colonize Mars,<\/strong> a key\u00a0SpaceX ambition.<\/p>\n
