The Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility, is formerly known as the Pretoria Maximum Prison Gallows in Pretoria. It is the only prison in South Africa where executions took place during the apartheid era. More than 3 500 prisoners were executed at the prison, of which 132 were political prisoners. This happened between the years 1902 and 1989.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The gallows were dismantled back in 1996. It was however, decided to restored as a memorial museum.\u00a0The prison was declared a national heritage site and it is usually visited during the human rights month as part of the heritage, by mostly the department of arts and culture. The museum is not yet open to the public, due to the fact that the prison still operational as a C-max prison,\u00a0making it difficult to open the museum to everyone.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, popular DJ and business man, Shimza caught the smoke when he responded to a tweet by the Minister of Arts and Culture. The Minister had visited the museum yesterday, as part of opening the heritage month. The place has ropes all over, which shows how and where Prisoners used to be hung. Majority of these people were black, who were hung against their will. This is history, and the future generations to come should continue to learn about it, no matter how painful it is.<\/p>\n

Shimza responded to the tweet by saying the Minister should read the room. Meaning, he should not showcase this as the timing is off. Rapper Riky Rick used a rope to kill himself a week ago, so this is what Shimza was referring to. The tone he used, was inappropriate to be addressing not just a Minister, but an elder.<\/p>\n

People came off at him, and told him that the government\u2019s plans will not stop because something tragic happened to his colleague. Shimza has a right to be hurt, and also has a right to feel that this is inappropriate, but the department has to continue with what it does.\u00a0<\/p>\n
