{"id":1006606,"date":"2022-02-28T22:13:48","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T22:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/02\/28\/fifa-and-uefa-ban-all-russian-clubs-and-national-teams\/"},"modified":"2022-02-28T22:13:48","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T22:13:48","slug":"fifa-and-uefa-ban-all-russian-clubs-and-national-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/02\/28\/fifa-and-uefa-ban-all-russian-clubs-and-national-teams\/","title":{"rendered":"FIFA and UEFA ban all Russian clubs and national teams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"398\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/247517_4786142_updates-696x398.jpg\"   alt=\"FIFA\" title=\"FIFA\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">FIFA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Russian football clubs and national teams have been suspended from all competitions by Fifa and Uefa after the country\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The world and European football governing bodies said they would be banned \u201cuntil further notice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It means the Russian men\u2019s team will not play their World Cup play-off matches next month and the women\u2019s team have been banned from this summer\u2019s Euro 2022 competition.<\/p>\n<p>Spartak Moscow have also been kicked out of the Europa League and their last-16 opponents RB Leipzig will advance to the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n<p>Uefa has also ended its sponsorship with Russian energy giant Gazprom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFootball is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine,\u201d Fifa and Uefa said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fifa and Uefa decided to take action after Russia, supported by Belarus, launched a military invasion of neighbouring Ukraine last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian men\u2019s team had been scheduled to face Poland in a World Cup play-off semi-final on 24 March.<\/p>\n<p>Fifa had previously ruled that Russia must complete their upcoming games in neutral territory, under the title Football Union of Russia, and without their flag and anthem.<\/p>\n<p>However, the announcement drew criticism \u2013 and Scotland and the Republic of Ireland joined several other nations, including England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as Poland, the Czech Republic and Sweden, in refusing to play against Russia.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Scottish FA president Rod Petrie wrote to his Ukrainian counterpart \u201cto send a message of support, friendship and unity\u201d,\u00a0\u00a0with those two nations due to meet in their World Cup play-off semi-final on 24 March.<\/p>\n<p>The 2022 Champions League final, originally due to be played in St Petersburg on 28 May, has been moved to Paris while numerous clubs have taken their own steps to disassociate themselves from Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester United has terminated its sponsorship deal\u00a0with Russia\u2019s national airline Aeroflot while Bundesliga club Schalke has cancelled its partnership with main sponsor Gazprom, having last week removed the Russian energy company\u2019s logo from its shirts.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Monday, Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said: \u201cThe whole world has to be compact and show [it is] solid against the stupidity of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cI think it\u2019s right to express our disappointment about the stupidity about some decisions.
