Former controversial top spy Arthur Fraser revealed that he had received his degree from the London College of Communication in 1995, just a day after being exposed for lying on his official CV about being a graduate of the famous University of London. The college was formally known as the \u201cLondon College of Printing\u201d during the time.<\/p>\n

Fraser lied on his CV and on the websites of the State Security Agency (SSA) and the Department of Correctional Service (DCS) about having a BA (Hons) degree in Film and Television from the prestigious University of London, according to News24 on Sunday. Fraser\u2019s curriculum vitae said \u201cLondon University.\u201d He had never attended a university before.<\/p>\n

Fraser\u2019s CV altered overnight in 2020 after getting queries from journalist Jacques Pauw, indicating that he had received a degree from the \u201cLondon Institute.\u201d On Thursday last week, when asked about the anomalies, Fraser refused to give Pauw with proof of his qualifications. Fraser\u2019s lawyer, Eric Mabuza, issued a media statement on Monday afternoon, criticizing News24 and its sister magazine, City Press, for printing a \u201cfalse\u201d and \u201cvindictive\u201d report.<\/p>\n

He included a letter from the secretary and registrar of the University of the Arts in London (UAL) with his press statement, claiming that Fraser was a student at the London College of Communication (previously the London College of Printing), one of the UAL\u2019s six colleges.<\/p>\n

The UAL, formerly known as The London Institute, was only granted university status in 2004. Fraser earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in 1995.<\/p>\n

Regarding the claim that he may have misled about his degree to several state departments, the SSA, Mabuza remarked on Fraser\u2019s behalf that it was \u201cpreposterous and humiliating\u201d to insinuate that he had lied about his \u201cformal CV\u201d qualifications. In March 2020, Pauw questioned Fraser about the fact that his CV on government websites lists his degree as having been earned from the University of London, despite the fact that the university does not offer a film and video production programme.<\/p>\n

He did not reply to inquiries and afterwards modified his CV to say \u201cLondon Institute.\u201d The London Institute, which no longer exists, was originally home to the London College of Communication. Fraser says he would \u201cordinarily\u201d not react to Pauw\u2019s queries, but \u201cthese false charges are so serious and flagrant that they cannot be left unchecked,\u201d according to a statement released by Mabuza.<\/p>\n

He doesn\u2019t explain why his CV said \u201cLondon University\u201d rather than \u201cLondon College of Communication,\u201d or why he didn\u2019t produce the UAL letter before it was published. Fraser\u2019s original degree certificate was \u201clost or destroyed,\u201d according to reports. The News24 report was part of a \u201cstratagem,\u201d according to Fraser\u2019s statement, and those with whom he (Pauw) works. Mr Fraser will hold him accountable in the next High Court trial,\u201d Fraser said, referring to his R35 million defamation claim against Pauw over his 2017 book The President\u2019s Keepers.<\/p>\n
