{"id":1005443,"date":"2022-02-27T11:44:06","date_gmt":"2022-02-27T11:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/02\/27\/ndc-mp-charged-for-defaming-mce\/"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:44:06","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T11:44:06","slug":"ndc-mp-charged-for-defaming-mce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/02\/27\/ndc-mp-charged-for-defaming-mce\/","title":{"rendered":"NDC MP charged for defaming MCE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"404\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Kweku-Ricketts-Hagan-699x406-696x404.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Kweku-Ricketts-Hagan-699x406\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The Cape Coast High Court has ordered the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, to retract defamatory statements he made against the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Cape Coast, Ernest Arthur, within three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The court also asked Mr Ricketts-Hagan to retract the defamatory statements through a press conference and render an apology to the MCE.<\/p>\n<p>The court, presided over by Justice Patience Mills-Tetteh, also charged GH\u00a2100,000 general damages against the MP.<\/p>\n<p>A cost of GH\u00a25,000 was awarded in favour of the MCE.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>The court also restrained the MP together with his assigns, agents and privies from making further defamatory comments against the MCE.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The MCE on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 filed a defamation suit against the MP following what he described as \u2018defamatory comments\u2019 about him by Mr Ricketts-Hagan after his confirmation as MCE.<\/p>\n<p>In reference to a press conference held by Mr Ricketts-Hagan after the confirmation of Mr Arthur as MCE, the MP was alleged to have used unsavoury words to describe the MCE.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the writ, Mr Arthur prayed the court to restrain Mr Ricketts-Hagan, his agents from further publishing defamatory statements against his person.<\/p>\n<p>A statement of claim accompanying the writ of the MCE said Mr Ricketts -Hagan knew that the statements he published about him were untrue but went ahead to publish same.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Arthur said in the writ that although he was successfully approved by the assembly members as MCE, the MP was bent on tarnishing his image with unprintable words.<\/p>\n<p>It said the statements were made in an environment where the plaintiff (MCE) was well known and was still performing his political duties.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Arthur said the statements by Mr Ricketts-Hagan which were broadcast in the media nationwide had seriously injured his reputation and brought him into public ridicule and contempt.<\/p>\n<p>            <!--  [embed]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=videoseries[\/embed]<!--\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>--><\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"CjUFFYD_7_o\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"After The Fatal Accident, She Left Me For Another Man - Obra on Adom TV (25-2-22)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CjUFFYD_7_o?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Cape Coast High Court has ordered the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, to retract defamatory statements he made against the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Cape Coast, Ernest Arthur, within three weeks.
