Asantehene Goes Angry As He Bans Four Groups In Chieftaincy Matters At Barekesse.

0

The adage that toubles hardly goes after human beings but it is human beings who rather chases troubles for themselves’ manifested itself at Manhyia Palace the officials seat of the the occupant of the Golden Stool Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Monday October 31 2022.

On the fateful day Otumfuo took the opportunity to ban four groups at Barekese who have been allegedly using chieftaincy matters to disrupt peace of the town.

Otumfuo also known as King Solomon used the occasion to brief the four groups who are staying at Barekese the capital city of the Atwima Nwabiagya North District about their history and the need for them to promote peace and unity whilst they live in there.

The four groups that Asantehene mentioned them are the alleged representatives of Bantamahene, Asiakwahene, Atipihene and Ankwabiahene respectively.

His Royal Majesty hinted that the aforementioned chiefs came to him and pleaded for a place to settle their subjects at Barekese which was then he Asantehene had given out to Anantahene.to take care of it.

Asantehene related that upon allowing the chiefs to accommodate their subjects he never gave anyone the mandate to install any chief to represent them at Barekese.

Though a liberty was given to them to farm on the lands to earn their living.

Therefore whilst the town continue to grow under the care of Anantahene everyone occupying the land was expected to channel his or her grievances to Anantahene for attention.

According to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II he legitimately installed Nana Amoapem Brenya I as a substantial chief of Barekese to take charge of the development of the town about three years ago.

Otumfuo said as a custodian of the Barekese town no one was known to him as a true royal who can occupy the Barekese stool expect the family members of Nana Brenya I.

Therefore he installed Nana Brenya I as Barekesehene after going through a successful traditional processes.

Asantehene said he was taken aback when after the enstoolment of Nana Brenya I the four groups who have nothing to do with the royal issues of the town rose up against the chief.

First l thought that the new Barekesehene was allegedly imposing himself on the people or selling lands so l decided to discipline him when l get to know that the allegations are true.

But to my surprise the issue was far different, Otumfuo intoned.

The actions of the four groups Asantehene reiterated resulted into uncontrollable tension to such an extent that number of alleged hired youth who were involved in the confusion were arrested by the police.

Otumfuo said to ensure that peace and unity prevail at Barekese he personally intervened for bail for the accomplices even though he knows he knows the people who were behind the violence at Barekese and was even ready to expose them.

In their appearance before Otumfuo on Monday October 31st 2022 at Manhyia Palace Asantehene made it clear to the four groups that non of them should nominate to install a chief to represent them at Barekese.

With immediate effect l have banned anyone who would call himself as a chief or sub chief of Barekese expect Nana Amoapem Brenya I.

Barekese belongs to me so if you are a man go back to Barekese and violate my orders and you will incur my wrath, the King told the groups.

Adding that Nana Amoapem Brenya I is the only legitimate chief of Barekese l know, he is coming there and if you are a man you can try him.

Mincing no words King Solomon as he is affectionately called told the groups that Bantamahene, Asiakwahene, Atipihene and Ankwabiahene who came and pleaded on your behalf have no share of property at Barekese.

And how much more you can

struggle for lands and chieftaincy positions whilst you are aware that you are a stranger according to history.

Having sealed the Barekese chieftaincy conflicts with the recognition of Nana Amoapem Brenya I as a legitimate chief in the presence of all the affected chiefs, Otumfuo made a history.

Otumfuo said for the fact that the groups have been grossly erred he don’t want them to feel hungry whilst they stay at Barekese.

The Great King asked some of his top ranking chiefs to as a matter of urgency engage the service of Surveyors to Barekese on demarcation mission to find out the portions of lands that belong to the groups.

And find out how much they have been sold and unsold ones for documentary purpose to enable. them have access to it.

After all these Nana Amoapem Brenya I being the Barekesehene would be the authorized person to sign allocation papers.

And again their overload chiefs should not be allowed to interfere in any portion of lands that the Surveyors would be handed over to them Otumfuo insisted.

Asantehene concluded that with immediate effect the groups should always serve their overloads chiefs been Bantamahene Asiakwahene, Atipihene and Ankwabiahene .

And bear in mind that they have nothing to do with the issues that relate to the Barekese Stool lands.

Considering Otumfuo’s decision as laudable the group jointly thanked Asantehene for his kind advise and assured to cooperate to ensure peace and unity towards the development of Barekese and it’s surrounding areas.

Japan becomes first country to release final squad

0

Playmakers Daichi Kamada and Takefusa Kubo headline Japan’s 26-man squad for the World Cup in Qatar after manager Hajime Moriyasu announced his picks on Tuesday.

Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi and midfielder Reo Hatate notably missed out on selection for the Samurai Blue, who will take on Germany in their Group E opener on November 23 before facing Costa Rica on the 27th and Spain on December 1.

Vissel Kobe forward Yuya Osako and Union Berlin midfielder Genki Haraguchi also went unnamed by Moriyasu, with Nagoya Grampus winger Yuki Soma getting a surprise call.

“I’ve made the best, comprehensive selection possible, placing importance on our activities thus far, the situations the players are facing (at their clubs) and with how we plan to play at the World Cup in mind,” Moriyasu said.

“There really are lots of players in all positions that could have been picked. It was extremely difficult.”

Japan has reached the knockout stage of the tournament three times, the most of any Asian nation, and Moriyasu reiterated Japan’s ambition is “reaching the last eight” for the first time in their seventh straight appearance.

Kamada and Kubo are among 19 first-time World Cup selections, also including attackers Junya Ito, Takumi Minamino and Kaoru Mitoma, as well as midfielder Hidemasa Morita and defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Captain Maya Yoshida and Hiroki Sakai will play their third straight World Cups at the back. Experienced defender Yuto Nagatomo, 36, will travel to his fourth straight finals along with 39-year-old goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima.

Moriyasu kept faith in defender Ko Itakura and forward Takuma Asano, who have both been out since mid-September due to knee ligament injuries, but are expected to recover in time for the World Cup.

With Kubo, Morita and Ao Tanaka also picking up knocks in the past week, Moriyasu said he could be forced into making late changes, especially with games in European leagues taking place until a week before the Nov. 20 World Cup opening.

“We never know what might happen. Players (not picked) have equivalent abilities and I hope they retain their will to fight for Japan,” he said.

Moriyasu’s side will play a warm-up game against Canada on November 17 in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Japan’s World Cup squad:

Goalkeepers: Eiji Kawashima (Strasbourg), Shuichi Gonda (Shimizu S-Pulse), Daniel Schmidt (Sint-Truiden)

Defenders: Yuto Nagatomo (FC Tokyo), Maya Yoshida (Schalke), Hiroki Sakai (Urawa Reds), Shogo Taniguchi (Kawasaki Frontale), Miki Yamane (Kawasaki Frontale), Ko Itakura (Borussia Monchengladbach), Yuta Nakayama (Huddersfield), Hiroki Ito (Stuttgart), Takehiro Tomiyasu (Arsenal)

Midfielders/Forwards: Gaku Shibasaki (Leganes), Wataru Endo (Stuttgart), Junya Ito (Reims), Takuma Asano (Bochum), Takumi Minamino (Monaco), Hidemasa Morita (Sporting Lisbon), Daichi Kamada (Eintracht Frankfurt), Yuki Soma (Nagoya Grampus), Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton), Daizen Maeda (Celtic), Ritsu Doan (Freiburg), Ayase Ueda (Cercle Brugge), Ao Tanaka (Fortuna Dusseldorf), Takefusa Kubo (Real Sociedad)

Investing and Support women-led businesses to use technology – Stakeholders at Standard Chartered Innovation and Fintech Festival urge

Investing and Support women-led businesses to use technology – Stakeholders at Standard Chartered Innovation and Fintech Festival urge

The second edition of the Standard Chartered Digital Banking Innovation and FinTech Festival came to an end with a call for stakeholders to invest more in programmes that will accelerate the growth of women-led businesses across the continent.

In addition, a rallying call was made for more collaboration among banks, fintechs, regulators and other stakeholders in the financial sector even as participants committed to propel diversity, inclusion and sustainability in finance with technology as the driver.

Speaking on the second day, the Board Chairman of Standard Chartered Ghana PLC, Dr. Emmanuel Kumah reiterated the bank’s commitment to lifting participation and building a sustainable future by supporting entrepreneurs, particularly women, through its ground-breaking initiatives.

He also emphasised the need for mentorship and funding facilities to help scale their businesses.

He said, “with a thriving start-up scheme, internet penetration of almost 50 percent, and the country having one of the highest rates of women-owned enterprises, we believe that these sessions will provide the insights and the opportunities for female techpreneurs looking to grow their businesses at scale and foster a stronger and more dynamic eco-system in Ghana and beyond”.

“We at Standard Chartered Bank will continue to chart a journey towards digitization and self-disruption in Africa while making it a priority to harness technology, and at the same time, champion the next generation of entrepreneurs”, Dr. Kumah added.

On her part, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson lauded Ghana’s efforts in quickly becoming a regional tech hub and a pacesetter on the continent.

She noted that “in Ghana, women are the main actors in the country’s micro, small and medium enterprises. A sector that is the anchor on which the economy hangs, as SMEs represent 92 percent of businesses and contribute 70 percent of Ghana’s GDP.”

The event highlighted the need to support more women-led and women-owned businesses through technological advancements, products and services seeing that their contribution to economic growth cannot be overstated.

In a speech read on her behalf by Ms. Clarissa Kudowor, Deputy Director of the Payment Systems Department of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the Second Deputy Governor of the central bank, Mrs. Elsie Addo Awadzi emphasised the role women-led businesses played in the economy and appealed to technology services to innovate products that meet the needs of these women.

She remarked, “If we think about the critical role women play in supporting families and livelihoods and the socio-economic life within the Ghanaian society, then this gap of 11 percent presents a significant developmental barrier and will require concerted policy action on all fronts.”

In the panel discussion on “Technology, Gender and economic growth: Expanding the role of technology in women-owned business for development”, the panelists highlighted the difficulties that women entrepreneurs face in sourcing funding for their businesses. They concluded that getting more women in decision-making roles would make it easier for women-led ventures to access funding for their startups, technology to innovate their processes, and mentorship opportunities to move them forward in a competitive marketplace.

Panelists on day two included: Ethel D. Cofie, Chief Executive Officer, Edel Consulting; Winnifred Kotin, Co-Founder Superfluid Labs; Rachel Crawford, Director of Special Projects at Village Capital, and Dr. Areeba Khan, Chief Executive Officer, Taqwa Invest (UAE) and moderated by Khadija Hashimi, Regional Head, Corporate Affairs Brand and Marketing, Africa & Middle East

The event wrapped up with members of the Women in Tech Incubator Cohort 2 sharing their experiences, the impact SCB has made in elevating their businesses as women-led entrepreneurs, and a fintech exhibition of various disruptive technology innovations and businesses.

The two day-long event convened thought leaders from banking, technology and entrepreneurship to discuss how technology is reshaping enterprises on the African continent and empowering women-led businesses in Ghana.

Power Outage Ends Prisons – Braves Battle… In ABL Play-Offs

0

It has come up that an alleged strange power outage accounted for the abrupt end of the Prisons – Braves play-offs basketball game at the Prisons Court, Cantonments in Accra last Saturday.

Prisons (Reformers) started the game well and picked an early lead scoring Braves of GRA 13-9. The same situation was the case in the second quarter where they extended the lead at the half by 16 points with half time score 33-17.

The 3rd quarter started with a quick increase in the deficit to 19 points, and that was when the game changed. Braves scored in large numbers and quick successions while neutralising the Reformers of a prisons offence and cleared the 19 points deficit at the end of the 3rd quarter with scores at 40-40.

The momentum was on and Braves immediately took a 6 points lead at the 4th quarter before it started drizzling with Nii Kwate of Braves at the free throw line to shoot two free throws, but the game was stopped. After a while the rains stopped and the court was cleaned dry by the supporters of Braves and for the continuation of the game. Officials were on court ready to blow the whistle for the continuation of the game when the lights on the court went off. All attempts by the league organisers and Greater Accra Basketball executives to get to the switch proved futile. Prisons officers who could go into the yard to put the lights on refused to do so, and while the executives tried to get there, they were refused entry.

There was light everywhere but the court, clearly showing that the black out was an intentional act to stop the game and hope for a replay.

First quarter points: 13-9

Second quarter points: 33-17

Third quarter points: 40-40

Fourth quarter points 42-48

In favour of Braves of GRA

Braves came back due to the change in defensive tactics and established a more potent offence which Reformers of Prisons couldn’t find answers to.

And speaking on what might have accounted for the blackout, Head coach of Braves, Richard Tony Kweku Borsah said, “…Braves was aggrieved because they thought the game was in their hands. They thought Prisons had deliberately put off the lights so the match couldn’t continue. Braves were up by six points with seven minutes to go.”

Director of Greater Accra Basketball League, Alex Kukula, and Vice President of Ghana Basketball Association also said “…we can only speculate that what happened was delibrate or not, for me, for the whole Prisons Headquarters lights to go off is serious. Let’s keep calm and find solution to this.”

Embrace local substitutes for cement production – Dep. Trade Minister urges manufacturers

0

Michael Okyere Baafi - Deputy Minister, Trade and Industry

Michael Okyere Baafi – Deputy Minister, Trade and Industry

A Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi, has called on local cement manufacturers to adopt local substitutes in the production of cement.

He said the use of local substitutes such as clay and limestone would not only reduce the cost of production and significantly reduce pricing but would also reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and imports.

“Clinker is the primary ingredient in cement manufacturing but it is imported and contains CO2, which is detrimental to the environment,” he said.

The deputy minister was speaking to local cement producers at a forum in Accra held on the theme: “Reducing Carbon Dioxide Emissions: The Role of Local Substitutes in Cement Manufacturing”.

The forum brought together professionals from the cement and concrete industries to discuss new trends and to discuss ways to make the cement and concrete industries more sustainable.

It was organised by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), in partnership with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) of Germany to identify the next steps towards attaining the goal of reducing the CO2 footprint of concrete products.

Participants in the forum discussed issues ranging from health and safety, best practices and reporting, thought leadership, resilience and how innovation could help make their businesses more sustainable.

Govt support

Mr Baafi assured cement producers that the government was ready to assist them with a conducive environment and testing facilities to help them to produce with local substitutes and stay profitable.

“The country’s construction industry is at a crossroads where cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative inputs are needed to make the industry sustainable,” he said.

He said in the government’s quest to improve the construction industry, considered a key component of its industrialisation drive, it went into partnership with the German government to collaborate on testing and standards development for construction materials and chemicals.

Mr Baafi said through the partnership, local manufacturers would have the access to global standards to guide their production.

“The economic benefits of these substitutes cannot be underestimated. Clinker is not found in Ghana and every cement manufacturer imports, putting more demand on foreign currencies to pay for imports,” he said.

Standards

The Deputy Director-General in charge of Conformity Assessment at GSA, Clifford Frimpong, indicated that standards provided much of the technical detail and safety requirements to make a good policy work, including everything from test methods in the construction industry to good management practices and the removal of barriers to international trade.

He, therefore, called on cement manufacturers to adopt the GSA standards for their regulatory and policy activities as they were made in collaboration with them.

“It contains elements that will improve the country’s construction industry and propel the country into an important global economic player and protect its climate,” he said.

Background

The cement industry produces about 10 per cent of global man-made CO2 emissions of which 60 per cent is from the chemical process and 40 per cent from burning fuel.

A Chatham House study from 2018 also estimates that the four billion tonnes of cement produced annually account for eight per cent of worldwide CO2 emissions.

Television in the era of digitalisation

0

Long before the internet knocked on our doors to revolutionize entertainment and how we interacted with ourselves and the environment, television was the most popular and ultimate source of entertainment across the globe.

One would recall the early days of its introduction in Ghana when families, friends and even communities will gather around one television set to watch content on the only TV content provider at the time, GBC. Even when the airwaves were liberalised and GBC’s monopoly was subsequently broken to usher in an era of media pluralization, television still remained popular.

With more and more homes and families owning television sets, the medium became a binding element for families who sat together to watch their favourite shows and movies. And then the internet revolution hit us with many predicting the extinction of traditional TV content as we knew it.

Technology and innovation have opened up new and robust ways of disseminating information across multiple channels. As technologies improved, so did the quality of the channels through which information was disseminated. Digitisation has, in no doubt, been revolutionary across different facets of the world’s experience.

Unlike my parents’ generation, today’s average person has freedom of choice and decisions never seen before. What to watch, where to watch, when to watch and even how many times they want to watch whatever content is in the absolute control of the viewer or audience. This level of freedom has shaken the entertainment industry to the core, driving some producers to the brink.

In all of this, the television industry has been considered the major victim because every television content can now be seen on the internet at any point in time regardless of geographic location.

In a dispensation where technology improves by the hour making sources of entertainment easily accessible, therefore, the rather enormous challenge for the traditional television industry is developing content and picture quality that make them top of the list of audiences’ entertainment options. As challenging as this is, there is an opportunity for the television industry to still thrive.

As content consumers themselves change, television content producers must themselves change as well lest they lose out to the internet which is already running at supersonic speed. Creating relevant content that resonates with the pulse of viewers is what will keep them glued to their sets. The demand is for television channels to produce and air content that has a disinfecting touch with a thorough understanding of the viewers in mind.

This may be easier said than done but there is a myriad of examples from across the globe where television content producers have created content that makes audiences want to carry their television sets to work because they cannot wait to get home to watch their favourite shows, movies, series or documentaries.

In creating any television content, a thorough analysis and understanding of the audience are critical. In Ghana, for example, figures from the 2020 National Population Census put the median age of Ghanaians at 21.5 years. What this means is that a vast majority of the Ghanaian population is below the age of 22. A truly young television audience demands content that responds to their particular situations and lifestyle.

Aside from being a young population, today’s generation has very short attention spans due to the plethora of entertainment sources and channels they are bombarded with by the hour. If they realise your products do not correlate with their expectations, they jump on to the next source with record rapidity. They are complex as they are agile and this adds to the challenge faced by television content producers.

Television content production has always been a challenge in Ghana. There is always a clamour for quality content whether local or foreign. With internet penetration around 52 per cent and growing by the day, Ghana’s television industry has a daunting challenge in matching up or at least producing content that is close to what the average Ghanaian can now access via online streaming services.

And within the current discussion, the intervention by 3Media Networks to tap into popular Ghanaian culture and produce content across media channels – TV, Radio and Online – that touches the sensitivities of the Ghanaian audience at the core is par excellence.

It is no wonder that barely a month after its launch, 3Media’s ‘This is Culture’ cross-media production has gained critical acclaim. It is more of such innovations that the television industry requires if it will survive and thrive in this era of the internet of things. Whether we like it or not, the internet has changed the will and everything in it.

It has created a new consumer whose appetite for quality pictures and content is insatiable. But technology does not have to be the death of television. Technology has to be an enabler of television. It is up to the managers and producers of the television industry to tap into the vast opportunities offered by technology and the internet to meet the demands of their audiences. It is not impossible. Although herculean, it is doable when shoulders are put to the wheel or better still the reel.
