eco.business Fund partners with Fidelity in hosting agricultural summit in Ghana

0

The development facility of the eco.business Fund, managed by Finance in Motion, in partnership with Fidelity Bank Ghana, hosted two agricultural summits in Ghana to discuss economical and sustainable solutions to the challenges currently faced by the local poultry sector.

The summits offered more than 100 participants a mixture of trainings and knowledge sharing sessions on access to finance for inputs and feeding, sustainable farm management practices, disease control, insurance, as well as how to navigate the current global uncertainty and impact of climate change. Key takeaways from the summits included the need to coordinate feed sourcing by aggregating demand and exploring alternative carbohydrate and protein sources to reduce the cost of production.

The summit held in Accra for players in the poultry sector follows a similar one held last month in Sunyani over two days and gathered numerous industry participants such as farmers, experts in animal husbandry, members of GIRSAL and GAIP, insurance companies, agricultural exporters and many more.

The initiative is the outcome of the eco.business Fund’s recent partnership with Fidelity Bank Ghana in supporting sustainable practices across various agricultural value chains in Ghana, including poultry. In addition to financial support, the fund provides technical assistance to the bank’s staff and end borrowers.

Poultry is the most developed livestock farming in Ghana and plays a vital role in providing the country’s population with poultry meat and eggs. The sector is also key in reducing poverty, promoting economic growth, and improving the livelihood of players in this industry. However, it faces considerable domestic challenges, such as the high cost of inputs, diseases, inefficient production methods, inadequate access to the market and poor processing facilities, are putting many poultry businesses out of business and the country’s food security at risk. Other challenges include competition from cheap imports, and access to affordable credit.

The adverse effects of changing climatic conditions on the industry are also significant. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures results in excessive panting, poor growth of the birds, reduced egg production, smaller sized eggs, and lower quality eggshells.

Fidelity Bank, a leading financial institution and a significant player in Ghana’s agricultural business finance space, has supported the sector for many years. The bank believes that preventing a further deterioration in the already fragile sector requires stakeholders to get together to find creative ways of solving the main challenges.

Dr. Jens Mackensen, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the eco.business Fund, said: “The support of the eco.Business Fund goes beyond access to finance. These summits, co-hosted with Fidelity, demonstrate our commitment to support farmers and industry stakeholders in the country by equipping producers with the skills they need to withstand potential threats to their businesses and adapt to the challenging global environment and climate change.”

On his part, the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Ghana, Mr. Julian Opuni, noted that  “Ghana’s agribusinesses have a lot of potential to contribute to the country’s economic development. As a local bank, Fidelity Bank has always explored ways of supporting SMEs. It is thus a fulfilling moment for us to see that this journey in supporting agribusinesses has had a smooth take-off with our poultry seminars held with industry players in the sector. We are confident that the lessons from the discussions and presentations will advance the industry and maximise poultry farmers’ returns on investment.”

The summit held in Sunyani had participants drawn from Ashanti,  North East, Bono, Bono East, Upper West, Upper East and Savanna regions  while the Accra edition had participants from the southern sector of Ghana.

“Beyond the introduction of the standard player contact, we have also been discussing the introduction of minimum wages for professional players in this country,” President Simeon-Okraku said during the dinner with the Legends event on Saturday

“Again, in my visit to the PFAG, we discussed this policy. This policy will go through the internal process and God willing next season, we should introduce minimum player salaries for professional players in this country.

“I understand that there is an insurance scheme for Ex players of our national teams led by the PFAG. We would explore the possibility of ensuring that we have a 100% coverage on health issues for our players,” he added.

Climate shocks may plunge 1 million Ghanaians into poverty by 2050

0

The World Bank Group’s new Country Climate and Development Report (CCDR) for Ghana estimates that at least one million more people could fall into poverty due to climate shocks if urgent climate actions are not taken.

The Report also warned that if pre-emptive measures are not taken, incomes could reduce by up to 40% for poor households by 2050, further worsening the economic plights of the less privileged.

Climate change has become salient in impacting economies across the globe, sending countries on a race with the 2015 Paris Climate Change to achieve net-zero emissions and reduce global temperatures to well below 1.5 degrees by 2030.

Pierre Laporte, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone lauded Ghana’s greenhouse emissions saying: “Ghana’s contribution to global greenhouse gases emissions is small, with emissions on a per capita basis at 24% of the global average. The country can take a more resilient development pathway, avoiding costly lock-ins, leapfrogging to cutting-edge technologies, and starting to mobilize climate finance.”

The report also revealed that “flooding affects around 45,000 Ghanaians every year, and half of Ghana’s coastline is vulnerable to erosion and flooding as a result of sea-level rise.”

It further identified some priority areas to build Climate Resilient and Low Carbon Development pathway that will foster more green, resilient, and inclusive growth in the country.

They are:

  1. Adopting an integrated approach to agriculture and environmental management by fostering integrated landscape management, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and supporting adaptation of coastal communities;
  2. Building sustainable cities and resilient infrastructure systems through better urban development, enhancements in resilient mobility infrastructure and services, and improved waste management;
  3. Boosting disaster risk preparedness through early warning systems, better national financial preparedness against climate shocks, and adaptive health and social protection systems;
  4. Realizing new opportunities for managing forest resource as an asset for climate resilience, including for carbon sinks focusing on reversing deforestation and promoting cleaner cooking;
  5. Promoting a transition to clean energy by scaling up renewable energy sources and strengthening regional energy markets; and
  6. Modernizing transport systems by, among others, improving public transportation and updating vehicle standards.

In the context of high debt and tight fiscal constraints, the report noted that Ghana will need to carefully prioritize investments starting from no-regret actions that maximize resilience benefits at an affordable cost.

“The country will need to take an urgent action to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability and improve business enabling environment to mobilize funds from various sources, including private and development finance. The report estimates the cost of climate action at around $2 billion per year (in present term value) until 2050, equivalent to 2% to 3% of cumulative GDP over the same period.”

Elon Musk Takes A Dig At Those Complaining About The $8 Per Month For Twitter Blue Tick | Social

0

Elon Musk, Twitter’s new CEO, has made it clear that he will not change his mind about charging monthly for Twitter “Blue Tick”.

Shortly after taking over the helms of affairs at Twitter, Musk announced an $8 fee for the new Twitter Blue subscription. This will be the first time a Twitter user will have to pay for a verification badge.

Musk’s new course of action has attracted much criticism on the platform. But Musk has a strong reply for all complainants.

He told critics on Twitter: “To all complainers, please continue complaining, but it will cost $8.”

He also clarified the situation about Twitter Blue. Priority will be given to comments, mentions, and searches, extended videos and audio can be posted, there will be half as many ads, and publishers can skip paywalls.

Elon has made it clear that Twitter will display a “secondary tag” for public figures, which currently appears to be in place for politicians. This will help distinguish prominent accounts from the general public visually.

According to earlier reports, Elon Musk could have potentially given a deadline of November 7, 2022 to Twitter engineers to bring the new Twitter Blue service in effect, so the launch could be closer than people are expecting.

Elon said the price will be adjusted depending on the “country proportionate to purchasing power parity.”

Big Brands Set To Miss Plastic Sustainability Targets |

0

Some of the world’s biggest consumer goods companies, including PepsiCo (PEP.O), Mars and Nestle (NESN.S), are almost certain to miss a target to make plastic packaging more sustainable by 2025, according to a new report published on Wednesday.

The study by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the United Nations Environment Programme also revealed that some companies – including Coca-Cola (KO.N) and Pepsi – are using more virgin plastic despite a pledge to reduce its use.

The report comes as U.N. members are due to meet in Uruguay this month to start negotiations on the first ever global plastics treaty, which is aimed at reining in soaring waste pollution choking marine life and contaminating food.

Some U.N. members are pushing for a pact that includes legally binding targets to increase recycled content in packaging and use less petroleum-derived virgin plastic, rules that would have financial implications for the consumer goods and petrochemical industries.

Dozens of major brands have in recent years set targets to increase plastic recycling and reduce the use of single-use packaging in partnership with the Ellen MacAurthur Foundation, as part of efforts to burnish their green credentials.

The headline pledge was that 100% of plastic packaging would be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025, but this goal will “almost certainly be missed by most organisations”, the environmental group’s report said.

Nestle said these targets were hampered by a lack of government recycling infrastruture globally, noting that it had reduced the amount of virgin plastic it uses by 8% since 2018.

Pepsi, Coca-Cola and Mars did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Greenpeace said the report is evidence that voluntary corporate targets have failed and called on the U.N. to forge a treaty that forces governments and companies to use less single-use plastic packaging.

“This underlines the need for governments to ensure that the global plastic treaty … delivers major reductions in plastic production and use,” said Graham Forbes, Greenpeace’s USA Global Plastics Project Leader.

“Anything less than this is a disservice to our communities and our climate.”

#FixTheCountry, Arise Ghana and others confirm participation in ‘Ku Me Preko Reloaded’ demo

0

At least six identifiable groups including #FixTheCountry and Arise Ghana have signed on to partake in the “Ku Me Preko Reloaded” demonstration scheduled for Saturday, November 5.

The demonstration being organised by private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu is already garnering support from civil society organisations and the general public who think government has not done enough to alleviate the plights of citizens in the struggling economy.

Martin Kpebu, an outspoken critic of the government, has made known his dissatisfaction with the president’s speech on the economy and called on Ghanaians to join in the protest on Saturday.

The protest is to compel President Akufo-Addo to resign as the head of the state.

“The government is blaming speculators for the fall in the cedi instead of tackling its depreciation… we will call on His Excellency to resign so that we can have fresh blood, fresh ideas,” he told JoyNews in an interview.

The ‘Ku Me Preko Reloaded’ demonstration is due to start at 7 am at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

According to Martin Kpebu, the exercise will be a reenactment of the historic 1995 ‘Ku Me Preko’ demonstration against the then Rawlings administration, where Mr Akufo-Addo played a lead role.

The call by Martin Kpebu adds to the scores of public agitations in the midst of the crippling economy.

Currently, Ghana’s economy is reeling under pressure with the local currency consistently losing its value to the US dollar and other major trading currencies across the globe.

This has sparked widespread calls for the resignation of the Finance Minister, who according to some sections of the populace, has failed woefully in the discharge of his responsibilities.

The economic difficulties have also resulted in what many have described as untold hardship among Ghanaians.

According to the critics, the government has failed woefully in resolving the economic crisis and offering relief to the citizens who are feeling the brunt of the situation.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has reiterated the commitment of his government to dealing with the prevailing challenges and helping put smiles back on the faces of Ghanaians.

At the moment, Ghana is finalising talks with the International Monetary Fund in a deal which is expected to stabilise the Cedi and inject some relief into the country’s ailing economy.

Climate Change Report On Ghana Launched | Social

0

The country can pursue its development objectives while considering the challenges of climate change and the opportunities from its transition following the launch of the World Bank Group Country Climate Change Report on Ghana.
The Ghana Report is the second to be launched in Africa, after that on Rwanda.

According to the 68-page report, addressing the country’s low emissions and major financing constraints in the short term should focus on bolstering resilience of its economy and society and also avoiding the creation of additional risks, among others.

It also called for the strengthening of institutional capacity for climate action and legal framework, as well as unlocking private climate financing.

In addition, it underscored the need to integrate agricultural development and forest and water management, while creating conditions for resilient cities and infrastructure.

Significance

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Jinapor, who was speaking at the launch of the report in Accra yesterday, said the launch was timely, coming at the time preparations were being wrapped up for the COP 27 event in Cairo, Egypt.

“We will study the recommendations as they relate to the ministry’s mandate and continue to work with all stakeholders, including the World Bank, to address the challenges of climate change for a more integrated and sustainable landscape management,” he said.

According to him, climate change had been identified as the most significant threat to sustainable development, dragging millions of people into poverty, adding: “If we are to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), then we must tackle climate change head-on.”

Mr Jinapor said although the country’s contribution to global emissions was minimal, estimated at 0.04 per cent, most of the emissions were attributed to agricultural, forestry and land use (AFOLU) activities.

Support

The World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Pierre Laporte, said the bank was already supporting Ghana to address climate change and build resilience.

“Our current portfolio stands at US$3.3bn, with strong engagements in disaster risk management, urban development, landscape management, forestry, water supply, social protection, food systems, among others.

“As part of the Climate Change Action Plan 2021-2025, we aim to step up our commitment to the climate agenda and also align all World Bank projects to the Paris Agreement by the end of this fiscal year,” he said.

Mr Laporte further said Ghana’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions was little, with emissions on a per capita basis at 24 per cent of the global average.

“Nonetheless, Ghana will be disproportionally affected by climate change without action; at least more than one million people could fall into poverty due to climate shocks, while incomes could reduce by up to 40 per cent for poor households,” he said.

The report also estimated that the additional cost of climate action was equivalent to between two and three per cent of cumulative GDP until 2050.

Situation

The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, said 20 per cent of the wealth of vulnerable countries had been eroded away, adding: “So we are at a very crucial point in which those who have contributed least to this scourge that we are facing are going to have to be responsible to pay for it.”

He, however, said there was a certain level of acknowledgement of transiting from mitigation to adaptation, which he said was necessary.

In a video presentation, the Senior Leader, Sustainable Development of the World Bank, Lorenzo Carrera, said climate change was a global crisis, and that the choices made today would influence the future.

Shippers Authority adjudged Public Sector Company of the Year

0

By Lawrencia Mensah

Accra, Nov. 02, GNA – The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has been adjudged the Public Sector Company of the Year at the 5th Ghana Business Awards (GBA).

The Authority emerged as one of the 80 companies and individuals recognised for their varied roles in supporting Ghana’s economic growth through various industries.

A press statement from the Authority said it (Authority) had attained the feat through significant achievements recorded under the year of review.

The achievements include the organisation of seminars and workshops, which contributed to a reduction in the payment of demurrage by importers from 27 million dollars in 2019 to 19 million dollars in 2021.

The statement said importers were also sensitised to navigate the global shortage of containers as well as the importance of buying insurance locally.

“In-depth presentations were made to businesses, especially entrepreneurs on how to position themselves to benefit from the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA),” it added.

They were also exposed to ways they could avert challenges faced by the Bank of Ghana Letter of Commitment.

It said the Authority continued its quest to sensitise shippers on International Commercial Terms (INCOTERMS 2020) and called for support from all stakeholders.

The statement said in the year under review, the Authority also organised its biennial Maritime Law Seminar for judges of the Superior Court.

It also had a successful Cocoa Freight Negotiation with 26 shipping lines for the export of Ghana’s cocoa.

“These achievements among others were geared towards reducing the cost of doing business at the port while protecting and promoting the interest of shippers,” the statement said.

The GBA, which was organised by Globe Productions, aims at promoting business excellence locally and internationally.

It provides a platform to recognise individuals and companies that play significant roles in the growth and development of their business sector while celebrating the key functions within the sector that promote growth and sustainability.
