Tanzania Deploys Army To Fight Kilimanjaro Fires |

0

Tanzania’s army has deployed hundreds of troops to help firefighters who have been battling fires on Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, for close to two weeks now.

Army officials say the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) will co-operate with other agencies and volunteers to ensure the fire is controlled before it causes more damage to vegetation on the mountain.

“Officers and men of TPDF have already arrived in Siha and Mweka areas in Kilimanjaro Region ready to fight the fire,” a statement by the TPDF says.

A BBC team on the slopes of the mountain witnessed some of the soldiers arriving at the two entry points to the mountain on Tuesday.

A series of wildfires have been breaking out in different areas on the mountain, after an initial fire started near a camp along a popular hiking route on 21 October.

Hundreds of people, including firefighters, national park staff, tour guides and civilians, have been battling to put out the fires with little success.

The cause of the fires is not known yet but the government says human activities are most likely to blame.

The government says a prolonged drought, layers of decaying organic material and strong wind are part of the reasons the fire has been hard to control.

Two years ago, a week-long inferno destroyed thousands of hectares of woodland on the mountain’s slopes.

The Politics Of Fuel Prices; The Doom Of Ghanaians

0

When politicians engage in frivolous politicking and abandon their core responsibilities of properly managing the affairs of the country, the citizens suffer. Especially when they have gullible citizens in the name of foot soldiers who cheer them on no matter what.

Don’t be deceived by President Akufo-Addo’s “we are in this together” mantra. He is not feeling the pinch in any way or form. Politicians never feel the suffering they create. Concentrating on their selfish gains is what creates suffering in the first place. They and their children are set for generations to come. Wise up.

Akufo-Addo mounted platforms all across this country touting boastfully how he was going to reduce fuel prices to ease the economic plight of Ghanaians, knowing fully well his Father did not leave him an oil well at home

Within the last two years of the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia-led NPP government, fuel prices have increased from a little above 4 cedis to an astronomical 24 cedis per liter range.

The prices at the pumps at Goil stations were still being used to play political propaganda. They were almost always “forced” to display a cheaper price per liter. Now rumor has it that the Government owes Goil so much hence the recent “no fuel” and “maintenance” signage we witnessed across Goil stations.

Goil has finally joined the market with the real prices and suddenly they all have fuel and maintenance is over. When politicians play politics and propaganda with the exchange rates, the citizens pay the ultimate price at the fuel pumps.

The President is now telling Ghanaians in his recent Nations Address On The Economy that the government was exploring cheaper sources of fuel. Why now? Why were they not using the most affordable sources already? Was it arrogance or lack of common S_ (expletive) on our part as a country?

What is the logic Akufo-Addo and his men are using to produce crude oil in Ghana, ship it all out there, and then go and buy it back at International market prices? Six years in power and no one has thought it wise to fix Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) with a lasting solution?

Both NPP and NDC have maned the affairs of this country for decades and yet can’t keep TOR operational for the benefit of Ghanaians? Corruption among political leaders has really killed Ghana.

The most pathetic bunch in Ghana are those who defend politicians for their failures at every turn. I hope NPP foot soldiers (since they are in power) use party cards to buy Gob3 and pay trotro fares.

If we don’t unite as citizens to demand better from politicians, we will continue to languish while they enjoy their spoils with their families.

VALCO workers rejected 22% salary increment – Mgt

0

The management of the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) has said workers, after a series of negotiations led by their union executives, made an initial demand of a 62% salary increment to the Management, and subsequently reduced it to 55%.

In response, the Management of VALCO, said it offered to grant a 22% increment in salaries for the workers with the assurance of further increment in the future as VALCO continues its efforts in finding a strategic investor to retrofit the plant.

The Management said it appealed to the workers to consider the current state of the Aluminium Smelter which, for years, has been recording lossesuntil the year 2021 where, through prudent management and better supervision, chalked some modest gains recording Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation & Amortization (EBITDA) profits.

They added that they are hoping to build on this and retrofit and modernize the plant to improve efficiency and increase its capacity.

“Management of VALCO further indicated to the workers union executives that they will on November 1, 2022, finalise a communique for submission to the National Labour Commission (NLC) for independent third-party adjudication in accordance with law after negotiations between Management and the workers ended up in a stalemate.

“However, the workers would have none of this and on October 31, 2022, embarked on a full-blown takeover of the Smelter, insisting they would not allow the Executive Management into the Plant.”

The Workers demonstrated on Tuesday November 1 for the removal of retirees who are still occupying top posts in the company.

The Local Union Secretary, Douglas Marfo told TV3’s Joseph Armstrong in an interview that the stay of these officials in office is negatively affecting the company.

“These are retirees who are supposed to go on retirement,” he said.

He further mentioned “Paa Kwesi Awhrien, HR director, Emmanuel Arhin the IT Director,” who have to go.

Armstrong further reported that the company has shut down.

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) cut power supply to the place.

2023 Budget: “Unfailingly Activate National HIV & AIDS Fund” – GHANET To Ken Ofori-Atta |

0

Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET) has appealed to President Akufo-Addo and Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta to quicken the activation of the National HIV and AIDS fund which has stalled since 2016.

The fund was enacted into law in 2016 following the amendment of the GAC Act, 938. According to the Act, the only person who can activate the Fund is the Minister of Finance.

Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin, President of GHANET delivering a solidarity message during the launch of the 2022 World AIDS Day and the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Ghana AIDS Commission said:

“I, therefore, wish to use this platform to make a special appeal to the Honourable Minister of Finance, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, to unfailingly activate the Fund in the 2023 budget which will be read exactly two weeks from today.

We need the National HIV and AIDS Fund to preserve the lives of the over 250,000 Ghanaians who are currently surviving on life-saving Anti-Retroviral (ART) drugs. It is instructive to note that about 8 percent of this number are children (i.e. 20,000). At the present time, the Global Fund is the major donor supporting Ghana’s interventions against HIV and AIDS. I am of the view that this is not tenable as the Global Fund may one day decide to wind down its activities.

As a country, we need to take our destiny into our own hands. And that is why GHANET and all Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Health are calling on the President and Minister of Finance to ACTIVATE the Fund”.

Ghana AIDS Commission @ 20

Meanwhile, Mr Ortsin has congratulated the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) on the occasion of its 20th Anniversary.

“GHANET has a long history with the Commission dating back to its founding in 2002. Since that period till now, our successive presidents have always served on the Governing Board of the Commission. We are, therefore, very familiar with the story of the Commission…I wish to congratulate the Ghana AIDS Commission for this important milestone and I pray for a successful 2022 World AIDS Day Celebration” he added.

Fighters to join Kpebu’s ‘Ku me preko reloaded’ demonstration

0

Members of the Economic Fighters League say they will fully participate in the planned demonstration to be organized by private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu.

They accused the government of engaging in thievery.

Martin Kpebu wants the president to resign over the economic challenges hence the planned demonstration.

In a post on Facebook, Mr. Kpebu announced; “Ku me preko demo for God and country. Let’s join the ku me preko demo reloaded to force Akufo-Addo to resign.”

He has scheduled to lead the march on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 7am.

In a statement on this, the Fighters said “Recent developments in our nation have underscored the fact that Akufo-Addo and his NPP cabal have become so comfortable in their stealing and capture that the voice of the People demanding accountability is often swallowed by his government’s impunity and contempt.

“For this reason it is important and vital for Ghanaians to increase pressure on government and the system, reminding these corrupt politicians that Ghana belongs to the People and that bad leaders can, and will, be disposed of.

“In this the Economic Fighters League will always applaud and support every effort made by Ghanaians to challenge the system, and as such we will be participating in the November 5 Demo taking place in Accra. However, as we organise we must remember that while it is understandable, in moments of crisis, to focus on the immediate issues at hand in order to ensure survival, the political beast we face is one that has a long-term plan to dominate and deprive we citizens of our power.

“That beast is the rotten NPP-NDC duopoly that has plagued Ghana for thirty years.
The Economic Fighters League has always stood by the assertion that the NPP and the NDC are the same, and that both parties must go. To truly liberate and save Ghana we must break free of the pendulum in which we have been caught since 1992. We must #EndNPPNDCRule; that is the reason why our movement resolved to build the alternative to these two through conscious, consistent organising at grassroots level.

“On Tuesday 1 November we made contact with Martin Kpebu, the sole convener of the 5th November demonstration. The objective was to seek clarity on whether we have unity of objective, as organization without unity of objective is purely mobilisation, open to imposing motives and losing us all valuable time at a critical moment. Our position on the state of affairs was stated to him as follows: – The current crisis is a culmination of, among other factors, years of corruption and self interest at the hands of both the NPP and
the NDC, the rotten political duopoly birthed by the 1992 constitution.

“- This period has been one sanctioned and underpinned by the 1992 constitution, of which the NPP And the NDC are custodians. This constitution is an abrogation of the power of the
masses to the political establishment, denying Ghanaians the power that is ours by right. This constitution must be abolished and a new, People-centred constitution put in place.
– The NPP-NDC duopoly has deceived Ghanaians that change has and is happening, while instead exploiting the people’s power for selfish gain. As such it is necessary that this pendulum duopoly is broken, in order for true and sustainable democracy to be established.

“- That is to say, Akufo-Addo and his NPP must go, yes, but so must the entire rotten system over which he is currently custodian. We can not mobilise for the removal of one and leave a vacuum for the other; we must prevent a cooption of this people’s action by the NDC who, along with the NPP, are equally responsible for the crisis we currently find ourselves in. Mr Kpebu has responded positively to the above points, indicating that he has no political affiliation. The 5th November demo offers a credible platform for Ghanaians to put pressure on the current custodians of this decaying system. But as we stand, we must be strategic in how we act to save Ghana. We must not allow ourselves, in this moment of crisis, to be co-opted for the partisan interests of this NPP-NDC duopoly, the very forces responsible for the crisis we are in.

“We must be very clear. It is not just Akufo-Addo who must go. His corrupt NPP must also go. Their corrupt partner in crime, the NDC, must go. The figurehead of the NDC Mahama, must also go. The entire oppressive system and the constitution underpinning it must
go. Akufo-Addo and his NPP, like Mahama and his NDC before them, are merely the symptoms of and custodians over a system that must be brought down in order for Ghana to survive and thrive.

“And so, Comrades, we encourage you to join the November 5th Demo. But as you do so, remember that as we address the symptoms, as we tear down and uproot the custodians, we must keep our eyes on what will truly save Ghana: a system that serves the people under a #NewConstitutionNOW; a move by the people to organise and reclaim our power #Organise4Power; the building of a new, sustainable alternative.

“It is only in this that we will be able to ensure that Mother Ghana is never again plagued by the rot of Akufo-Addo and his NPP, Mahama and his NDC, and any other ‘force’ that seeks to claim the People’s power for their own selfish interest.”
