Family loses everything as fire razed entire shack. Retired nurses step in

A wild fire left Miliswa Williams and her six children with nothing. Their shack in New Brighton in the Eastern Cape was totally burnt leaving nothing to salvage.

The Western Region Retired Nurses Organisation (WRRNO) stepped in on Saturday and donated groceries, clothes and cutlery to the family.

Williams said the fire was close to her children’s beds but she managed to get them out of the house.

“We managed to escape but we could not save anything.

“We went back to save some of our stuff with my brother and sister but the flames had reached the door.

“We do not know how the fire started but suspect a candle might be the cause.

“We do not have electricity and my brother said he blew the candle out, but accidents do happen,” Williams said.

She sobbed outside the burnt house on Saturday but said she was grateful they were all still alive.

“I have odd jobs but I am unemployed. The stress caused my face to swell as I have high blood pressure,” Williams said.

The community has helped the family rent another shack but the WRRNO saw the family’s plight on social media.

WRRNO chair Nonkululeko Mshweshwe said they were happy to help.

Mshweshwe said they were going to make more donations to the family and this was only their first donation.

They were going to communicate with the New Brighton Retired Nurses Organisation to partner with them.
