A mathematics teacher in KwaZulu-Natal who was nominated for a Global Teacher Award is being investigated for charges of sexual harassment and has been suspended from his position.
Despite the worldwide nomination of the teacher, who is stationed at a high school in the province’s northernmost region, the provincial education administration has distanced itself from the candidacy.
His identity has been hidden by TimesLIVE due to claims of sexual assault against him.
The awards are given out on a yearly basis in appreciation of teachers all around the globe who have made great achievements to their respective fields.
The instructor was due to attend the awards event in Dubai, which would take place the following month.
According to the department, the alleged occurrence occurred at a math boot camp where the instructor was “entrusted” with the education of the students under his supervision.
“As a result, the department disassociates itself from the international nomination and recognition process and does not support the nomination,” the statement said.
“The charges are grave, particularly in light of the increased incidence of -based violence (GBV) and associated crimes in South Africa.
“A disciplinary procedure is now in progress, with the most recent hearing taking place last week.
“The subject is still under consideration, and until [it is resolved], the department disassociates itself from any praises that may be bestowed upon it.”
In addition, it is stated that he claimed to have a degree, which was later shown to be fraudulent after further investigation.
The nomination of the instructor is deemed “unethical” by the department, which has forwarded the case to the South African Council of Educators (Sace) for further examination.
Sace did not react to a request for comment after being contacted.
SowetanLIVE reached out to the instructor, who categorically refuted the charges.
A lot of politics surrounds the important job I’m doing right now. “I have never sexually harassed anybody, and I do not have sexual relations with females,” he said.
