One way or the other, we’ve all heard that annoying sound of a mosquito buzzing in our ear. Just as the buzzing sound starts, our first impulse is to slap the mosquito away leading to slapping ourselves sometimes.
These tinny but most annoying of all insects called Mosquitoes, are members of a group of almost 3,600 species of small flies within the family Culicidae. The word “mosquito” is derived from Spanish and Portuguese word meaning “little fly”.
For ages, people do wonder, why mosquitoes make sound? Not just the sound, but why do they come very close to our ears or our head area…sometimes towards our eyes.
In this story, we you what scientists and some believers say about, mosquito’s buzzing sound into the human’s ears.
According to experts, mosquito’s wings can beat up to 1,000 times per second; and that, it is the sound of the beating that produces the mosquitoes buzzing noise. Amazingly, mosquitoes are able to control the beating of their wings to adjust the frequency of their sound, making their pitch higher or lower.
That buzzing sound we hear; according to scientists, is likely from a female mosquito. They explained that, because humans inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, the female mosquitoes buzz around our heads because of the carbon dioxide that we bring out.
Scientists have revealed that, the carbon dioxide that we exhale, stimulates the female mosquito to start searching for its host… flying to and fro to follow that concentration gradient back to the source.
Again, another researcher, Michael Riehle, professor of entomology at the University of Arizona, also revealed that, the sound made by mosquitoes is actually caused by their flapping of the wing, and that, when they fly above our ears, this noise seems very loud because the mosquito’s wings beat almost 500 times per second, hence the discomfort when these insects are on top of us.
Some fairy tales have also narrated that, “the mosquito once lied to an iguana, to puts sticks in his ears, and ends up frightening a snake…causing panic. At the end, an Owlet was inadvertently killed, making the Owl very sad to wake the sun until the animals hold court, to find out who is responsible. Later, the mosquito was found to be guilty, but she hides herself in order to escape punishment. So now she constantly buzzes in the human ears, to find out if everyone is still angry at her”.
Findings from some researchers have suggest that, the annoying buzzing sound by the mosquitoes are sounds of attraction. mosquitoes rely on these sounds, to attract a mate of the right species.
Madam Gabriella Gibson of the University of Greenwich has said that, researches have now shown that two mosquitoes don’t harmonize successfully if they are of the same sex, or if they are not the same type of mosquito. They might try for a while, but they’ll never find that harmony and eventually give up trying.
Gibson added that, “even the most ‘lowly creatures,’ such as mosquitoes, have highly evolved neurosensory systems that can process relatively simple auditory inputs to produce motor outputs enabling them to distinguish between other types of mosquito that are so closely related we need to analyze their DNA to tell them apart”.
