Athletic Bilbao knocked both Barcelona and Real Madrid out of this season’s tournament to reach the semifinals but Barcelona will receive a bigger share of the prize money.
The Copa del Rey is one of the most attractive competitions and gives access to two seats for the Super Cup, the most lucrative tournament in national football involving teams from the lower leagues. However, it is by no means a championship that distributes excessive prizes due to a regulation that includes an equitable distribution and also the performance of the teams in the last five years.
Based on the data from the 2020–21 season and with Royal Decree Law 5/2015 in its article 8, the money that each club receives is established based on the category of the club involved and also for a performance bonus.
The aforementioned text explains that 90% of the income from the sale of audiovisual rights is allocated to professional football (almost 30 million) and the remaining 10% is allocated to the promotion of amateur football and the teams of other categories that participate in the Cup (just over three million).
Thus, the Santander League clubs are left with almost 27 million, while those of the Smartbank League share three. 50% will be distributed equally among the 20 teams, and the remaining amount will be distributed according to their performances in the last five seasons. By participating in the K.O. tournament, the Santander League teams received 666,801 euros in the last edition.
The champion, Barcelona, received 586,785 euros, while the runner-up, Athletic, had 426,753 euros.Taking previous performance into consideration Barcelona without a doubt, are the team that will receive the most money from this competition despite getting knocked out in the round of 16 because of their past performance.
In this campaign, Valencia and Rayo Vallecano caused a surprise by sneaking into the semifinals, securing prize money of close to 150,000 euros for it.
