The President of Ghana and Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has told his fellow Presidents in the sub-region to be very careful and deal with this dangerous trend of coups in the area.
Countries like Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali have all seen Coup d’etat in recent times and so while Nana Addo was addressing ECOWAS in a meeting with the Head of States in Accra, on February 3rd, he mentioned that ” “Your presence here is a strong indication of your willingness to find a sustainable solution to the resurgence of cancer in our region. Let us address this dangerous trend collectively and decisively before it devastates the whole region.”
Moving on, the President also mentioned that, the resurgence of coup d’états in our sub-region is a matter of grave concern. He mentioned that the current revolution they are witnessing in the region challenges the democratic governance they’ve chosen for themselves.
“The resurgence of coup d’états in our region is a matter of grave concern, This revolution challenges the democratic way of lives we have chosen. We need to stand firm to protect democracy and freedom in our region,” the President mentioned at the ECOWAS meeting with the Head of States.
Last week, an army led by Lt. Col. Paul Henry Sandaogo overthrew the President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Kabore over issues that the President has failed to deal with Islamist Militants in the country.
ECOWAS has, therefore, suspended Burkina Faso from all its activities. That is an attempt by the group to compel Burkina Faso to return to Democratic governance.
The ECOWAS has also pledged to find the last panacea to the political situation in Burkina Faso and other countries that have similar issues.
