The disturbing news of a young girl who was allegedly behaded on Saturday by friends of her boyfriend has left many Nigerians in a devastating mood.
The young lady identified by Rofiat was said to have had her head cut off after being twisted by two teenagers who were believed to be friends of her boyfriend named Soliu.
According to multiple reports online, Rofiat was invited by Soliu to the scene in the usual way but only for her to meet her tragic death. The teenagers after they were arrested by men of Ogun state police command confessed that they wanted to use her head for money rituals.
Before they were eventually arrested, they were said to have put the severed head in a pot and were already burning it.
It was the burning that raised the consciousness of the people around and eventually orchestrated their arrest.
Killing for money ritual is no longer a breaking news in the newsstand as far as Nigeria is concerned today. It is gradually becoming part of daily existence with authorities doing little or nothing to curtail the speed at which the trend is going.
However, if there is need to make a progress in the fight against the ritual killing in the society, the Nigerian police should clamp down heavily on the habalists who usually motivate perpetrators to engage in killing people to make money.
And that is the reason the habalist who was behind the cruel action of these three teenagers should be arrested, shamed and made to serve as deterrent to others in his category.
If there can be a drastic reduction in the number of habalists who prepare money ritual for Yahoo boys, the rate at which desperate young people hunt for innocent souls for money rituals will be minimal.
The police should therefore do all things to track down the habalists whose instruction the teenagers were carrying out on Saturday before they were arrested.
