Coming into AFCON 2021, the Giants who were omitted from all title contenders lists included Egypt and Ghana. These two countries have won the tournament seven and four times respectively. Yet, pundits didn’t give them the chance as a result of their performances in recent editions. They both eventually lost their opening games: Ghana to Morocco and Egypt to Nigeria.
Ghana were booted out of the competition after placing last, with just a point, in the group. Egypt, on the other hand, turned their fortune around by winning the last two group stage matches. The record winners went ahead to survive the Ivory Coast scarce in the Round of 16 and today, won against Morocco to book a spot in the semi finals. Now, they stand a chance of winning the trophy, something which probably was considered their birthright before 2012.
This was the dream the Ghana Football Association sold to all Ghanaians before the tournament, after our first game and even before the Comoros disaster. The North African side last won the AFCON in 2010 when they beat Ghana at the finals. Gradually, they are regaining the super form. They really prove that the competition is a marathon of different laps which don’t bear effect on one another. A team can excel in one stage today and will be gone tomorrow in another stage.
Egypt show they have the experience when it comes to the AFCON. No one should be surprised if they win this one, even though they weren’t among the favourites.
