A Member of the National Democratic Congress Legal Team has disclosed facts on why the Majority Leader of Parliament is not helping matters when it comes to the Electronic Levy Bill and its passage into law.
Lawyer Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, a member of the NDC legal team has revealed that the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s lack of the required leadership skills to continue dialogue with the Minority side of Parliament on the E-levy is still dragging the passage of the Levy as well as ensuring peace in Parliament.
Lawyer Godwin added that the Majority side in Parliament also fails to tell Ghanaians the truth about the exact happenings in Parliament and that’s very worrying. He mentioned that the Majority should let Ghanaians be aware that indeed they don’t have the numbers to pass the Levy into law.
While Speaking on News File on Joy News, Lawyer Godwin said that for the E-levy not to be in a stalemate, the Majority Leader should show leadership towards his side and prevent needless accusations towards the Speaker and the Minority.
“I think the Majority Leader must begin to demonstrate leadership. If you don’t have the numbers and are unable to marshal the numbers, be frank with the people of this country,” he said.
He went on to tell the Majority of Parliament to blame themselves for the exit of the Speaker from Parliament on January 28 after a very long delay before the proceedings began.
“It was very late in the evening when the issue of e-levy came in and I recall very well the Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu and Muntaka Mubarak raised the issue that if the Majority is putting up this bill now, the bill will have to be debated and voted on it.”
“They [the Majority] deliberately kept shifting to the point that the Speaker had no other option than to threaten that he wants to leave. I think it is pretty obvious that the leadership of the Majority are unable to marshal the numbers required for the levy to be through,” he added.
Do you agree that the Majority Leader is not helping matters at Parliament?
