The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Lawyer Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu has questioned why a listening and sensitive government will go ahead to introduce E-Levy when survey indicates that majority of its people are against it.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Sunday, January 30th 2022, he wrote,
“This survey on E-levy is so clear. Why would a government which claims to be sensitive and a listening government insist on passing E-levy when the levy is exploitative, retrogressive, discriminatory, and majority of its citizens are against the said levy? Which can juju bi this? “
Lawyer Xavier Sosu backed his claim by posting a screenshot of a survey conducted by Ghanaweb.com on the E- levy. The survey asked the question, Do you support government’s proposed E-Levy ?
The survey garnered a total of 18, 805 votes. Out of this, 1,614 representing 8.58% voted yes. 17,060 representing 90.72% voted no and 131 people representing 0.70% indicated that they are indifferent to it.
The E-Levy is a proposed 1.75% tax on mobile money and electronic transactions. It has now been modified to 1.70%. It is yet to be approved or rejected by the Parliament of Ghana.
