Ladies: 7 Reasons You Have A Late Period, Other Than Pregnancy

When you have a late or missed period, consider these in addition to a pregnancy test. Alyssa Dweck, M.D., ob-gyn and co-author of V is for Vagina, explains why you can be having a late period that has nothing to do with a bouncing bundle of joy.

Checkout these seven reasons why you have a late period, other than pregnancy:

1. Excessive exercise or significant weight loss

If your body mass index (BMI) drops below 18, you may start to miss periods. Serious conditions like anorexia and bulimia can cause a missed period. Excessive exercise can cause the same thing, as can major weight loss or training for a marathon.

2. Anxiety

Stress can cause hypothalamic amenorrhea. This is the area of the brain where hormones for your period are regulated. The hypothalamus is very affected by stress. It could be the cause of a missed period if you’re going through a breakup or major life change.

3. Thyroid irregularity

The thyroid gland regulates your metabolism and interacts with many other systems in your body. Any type of imbalance can have implications for your period, says Dweck. If you notice other symptoms of a thyroid disorder, check in with your doctor for an official diagnosis.

4. Symptoms of Polycystic Ovary

PCOS is a hormone imbalance that comes down to a lack of ovulation. It can cause you to completely miss your period or just not menstruate regularly. Other PCOS symptoms include hair growth in places like the face and chest, difficulty losing weight, and potential fertility issues.

5. Chronic illnesses

Any chronic disease that’s left untreated or undiagnosed is a stressor to your general system and can result in missed periods. Think celiac may be the cause of your late period? Here’s how to figure out if you should get tested.

6. Your contraception

Low-dose pills or hormonal IUDs can cause a lack of menses. It can take time for your period to come back if you’ve stopped birth control, but it will usually resume in a few months.

7. Premature menopause

Premature menopause is also known as premature ovarian failure. Along with a missed period, signs of it include hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. “This isn’t very common, so you shouldn’t immediately worry about it,” says Dweck.
