Criminals gangs suspected to be nationals of neighbouring Burkina Faso are causing so much pain and making life miserable for the Fulani community in the Mamprugu-Moaduri district of the North East Region.
They have for some time now been targeting the Fulani, who are rich, for abduction, kidnapping in other words.
These suspected foreign criminals would cross the border into Ghana to kidnap well-to-do people of the Fulani extraction and then make a demand for payment of huge ransom to free them.
This has become a major security worry for the authorities as the Fulani in the area are having sleepless nights and living in fear.
The North East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has held an emergency meeting to calibrate an appropriate response to tackle and neutralize the cross-border criminals, tormenting the Fulani.
Already, two of the suspected kidnappers have been captured by the police and taken into custody.
Their names have been given as Issah Berliko and Karim Yartag.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Robert Angmain Anabiik of the Police Public Affairs, North East Regional Police Command, has confirmed the arrest and detention of the two suspected kidnappers.
The two have been linked to the abduction of a man at Yariba, a community in the district.
ASP Anabiik said they were arrested following police investigations into a reported abduction of a man at Yariba.
About 10 cases of kidnapping had been filed with the police in the district in the last three months of the year 2021 alone.
The police in response have upped their game – increased surveillance and intelligence-gathering to stay ahead of the criminals and stop them from having their way.
They have also intensified public education to encourage the people to flag up to the security agencies any suspicious characters they see in their communities.
