The National Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has said in an interview that the Electronic Levy Bill (E-Levy) is now popularly known as the ‘Bawumia Tax’.
Sammy Gyamfi while speaking in an interview with Angel Tv made it known that for Ghanaians not to forget the name E-levy and especially for our old mothers and fathers who cannot pronounce E-Levy, they should simply refer it to as ‘Bawumia Tax’. According to him, the Vice President, Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia is the head of the Economic Management Team of the government and so he is spearheading the implementation of the Electronic Levy Bill.
When asked by the host, Kofi Adoma Nwanwanii that Bawumia is not the President of Ghana so why is the levy not named after the President himself? Sammy Gyamfi replied that it is supposed to be named after the Vice President because he is the leader of the Economic Management Team. Adding that same way the ruling government has named the Digitalization Agenda after Bawumia saying he is the ‘Digitalization Man’ same way the E-Levy is named after him now.
“You know a lot of our old men and women cannot pronounce the E-Levy, that is why it is now popularly known as ‘Bawumia Tax’ because Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia is the head of the Economic Management Team of the government. He is the person spearheading the acceptance and implementation of the Bill so that it brings more hardship to Ghanaians.”
“The same way the ruling government names everything after the Vice President, that is the same way this new name was named after him. Do you not hear the ‘Digitalization man’? Just because Dr. Bawumia is the head of the Economic Management Team and leading the Digitalization Agenda, the same way ‘Bawumia Tax’ is named after him.” Sammy Gyamfi mentioned on Angel Tv.
The Communications Director of the NDC then went on to appeal to all Ghanaians to oppose the Electronic Levy Bill since it’s very unacceptable and going to bring more hardship to Ghanaians.
The Electronic Levy Bill was first read in Parliament by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta while reading the budget statement for 2022. The Finance Minister explained that the E-Levy will be charged on any electronic money transfer at a rate of 1.75% of the money being sent. The Levy since its announcement has received a lot of criticisms but it’s yet to be accepted by Parliament.
