We’ve Increased The Allowances Of Lecturers By 200%, But They Are Saying It’s Too Small – Saaka Salia

A member of the communication team of the NPP, Saaka Salia, has indicated that this current NPP government has increased the professional development allowance of lecturers by 200% (from GHC 500 to GHC 1500), but they are complaining that it’s too small.

Saaka Salia made this statement on ‘Good Morning Africa’ on Pan Africa television this morning, 11th January 2022, when he stated that the NPP has done better at meeting the demands of the lectures than the NDC.

According to Saaka Salia, one of the reasons why UTAG has gone on strike is that their professional development allowances are so small.

“The professional development allowances which is GHC 1500, they referred to it as being small, meanwhile this government is the government that came and increase the professional development allowances from GHC 500 under the NDC.”

Saaka Salia indicated that for the eight years under the NDC, they were paying these lecturers GHC 500 a year, and even with that payment, it was done in arrears.

“The NPP government came and there was a 200% increase, and then these same people are saying that it is too small. You see, sometimes I don’t get them.”

Saaka Salia stated that at least, they are not saying that the GHC 1500 professional development allowances are a huge amount, but whatever conditions that exist now, even existed under the NDC, at its worse form, but they were paid only GHC 500.

He said that the GHC 1500 might not be the desired amount the government wants to give to the lecturers, but at least they are moving forward, and the government has shown the readiness to ensure that they meet the lectures’ demands.

“What I’m saying is that whatever the situation is, you don’t come calling this government and creating the impression that this government is not meeting your aspirations. At least, this government has proven that they are far better than the previous government when it comes to your welfare.” Saaka Salia added.
