David Sebe Obuobi has found himself in the arms of the law after abandoning a rented vehicle at Asuatem; a farming community within the Nkawkaw Municipal of the Eastern Region. The vehicle, a 2021 Ford Explorer ST, was found on the 1 of January 2022 after David had abandoned it on 27 December 2021.
David after his arrest this morning stated that, he was afraid of the cost of repairs and that made him abandon the vehicle on 27 December. I called Madam Sarah to let her know where the vehicle was, and I was within the area when they came for it. I protected the car until they came to tow it away, David Sebe Obuobi stated to the Nkawkaw Police after his arrest.
Nkawkaw Police detective Isaac Acheampong, the leading officer who arrested David, confirmed that, David had breached a contract term and he will be made to face the consequences. David according to police investigations, had rented the Ford SUV from Cuddle Export Worldwide Group; a rental on 14 December 2021 for personal use but failed to honour his part of the contract after crashing the car.
My driver called me on 14 December that, David wanted a self-drive after delivering the vehicle to his house. I told him I don’t do self-drive because of insurance policies. car should get into an accident, the insurance won’t cover for damages if the driver driving the car at the time of the accident wasn’t an employee of the Cuddle Group.Â
He insisted, should anything happen, he will be the one taking the full cost and that was the assurance he gave before the car was released to him on 14 December, Mrs Sarah Brown, the Managing Director of Cuddle Export Worldwide Group said at the Nkawkaw Police station.Â
David had requested for a self-drive option of the vehicle instead of a chauffeured but ended up abandoning the car after an accident. The car which was abandoned on Asuatem road, had been crashed from the back by a taxi driver. David had given the car to one of his nephews on 26 December to run errands for him but unfortunately for him, his nephew crashed the car by crossing a taxi driver at Asuatem.
David instead of reporting the state of the accident to the rental , did no such thing and abandoned the car at Asuatem, police documents revealed. It hasn’t been confirmed, but from what has been gathered so far, David will be made to pay the full cost of a brand new car instead of a repaired one.
Sarah Brown, the MD of Cuddle Group, had argued that, the insurance policy on the car can’t be used to cover the damages since it was self-driven at the time of the accident and David would have to pay the brand new price of the vehicle. The car is worth over GH¢740,000. Our insurance cannot pay for the car because it was self-driven. We warned him that, self-driven comes with a higher cost should there be an accident, but he still insisted on self-driving.Â
He would have to pay the full cost of the car because we cannot use accident cars for rentals. He abandoned the car after the accident because he knew the repercussion involved. We told him everything and he still insisted on a self-drive, Mrs Sarah Brown stated on her willingness to accept a brand new car.Â
David is still at the Nkawkaw police station helping with investigations.Â
