“It is unconscionable to spend GHC 240 million a year on teacher trainees allowances, in the midst of a guarantor-free student loan, over subscribed teacher training, and thousands of classrooms without teachers”.
He added that at least, the GHC 240 million can recruit 6,000 more teachers to fill the vacancies in deprived schools. The Minister of Education should muster the courage and scrap this wasteful policy.
The teacher trainees allowances was scrapped from 2013 to 2015 by the then President John Dramani Mahama. It was restalled by Akuffo-Addo in 2016. However pressure mounts on the government to over unpaid arrears of the teacher trainiee allowances.

According to the Education Think-tank, the lack of textbooks and myriad of planning deficits surrounding the JHS curriculum’s rollout has marred the implementation of the curriculum reforms.
The MoE must streamline communication on timelines for rolling out the JHS and SHS curriculum, undertake proper planning and provide textbooks for the JHS curriculum in the 2022 academic year to prevent a repeat of the two-year absence of textbooks that has bedeviled the rollout of the primary school curriculum.
