Depending on who you ask, these images of beautiful African women devouring their lips for the sake of culture and tradition — you might get different answers.
Some may opine that this is beautiful simply because they want to continue to project and protect African history and culture. There’s nothing wrong with that but not at the expense of condoning inhumane acts.
With all due respect, what’s the point of destroying your lips, what’s the purpose? Even if it’s for culture and identity, isn’t culture dynamic? This should not and must not be condoned and must be abolished same as Female Genital Mutilation and other physically assaulting activities covered under the cloth of culture.
Keeping our heritage, history, and culture is good but we should evaluate them, learn from them and be dynamic. We must abolish the practices that no longer serve us and this is one of the many practices that deserve to be abolished.
