History of Kente.

Ghana has a lot of history, this history is part of what makes Ghana, Ghana. Kente, the beautiful popular kente comes from the word kenten which means basket in the asante dialect of the akan language.

Kenten because it makes reference to the basket-like pattern of kente. Amazing right?

Kente is a hand woven textile known to the Akan and Ewe tribes in Ghana. It is made in rich bold colours with various designs, made to richly express the culture and values of the Asantes. The Asantes are popularly known for Kente because they associate it with royalty.

   Kente weaving is known to have been inspired by observing a spider’s web and it’s weaving originated from Bonwire a town located in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Kente was originally considered as a royal cloth but is now accessible to people who are not royalty, despite this kente is still associated with wealth,social status and nobility and still associated to Royalty.

The Ewes were said to have adopted the style of kente weaving from the Asantes since they were once under the rule of the Asantes. The colours and pattern of kente is meant to communicate beautiful things to people and the communicate about the individuals wearing it.

   Kente is used to celebrate special occasions such as weddings and naming ceremonies. Whether Royalty or not, weddings a special occasions and must be treated as such. Recently Ghanaians use the beautiful kente cloth for their engagement or traditional ceremonies.
