Each and everyday, what I keep asking myself is that, so I am a Ghanaian and seeing what the country is running through what am required to do? What can I also do to help? I do not think this question goes for me only, what about you. What are you doing at all in this times of economic hardship. It is now clear that our dear country Ghana has been exposed on its weaknesses. Just within the last three months, people have said a lot about the situation in the country. Those who couldn’t control themselves took the red flages, banners and placards to the streets for a demonstration. At that time, were you part of them? If no then what did you do? Even though it the duty of the leaders to set the platform for you, do you really what the Nana Addo led government need from you now?
Its now clear that the country can never see development when everything is based on the services from the government- few politicians and elites. These days, we wait for the President or the leader to bring out an initiative before we follow. What if the leader is not ready to bring what favours you but rather his own preferences. Years are passing and all that we know is that, these politicians are the ones who are also the businessmen and women travelling and importing foodstuffs from abroad. We have sit idle and watched them changed our taste. These days, most people prefer the foreign foods and fast foods to our local delights, what is wrong with us? How come a country like Ghana with great soil quality, adequate rainfall, good climatic conditions amongst others still import food from outside. One day, I went to the market to buy onions and as usual, I needed to bargain with the seller to reduce the price,it was at this juncture that I was told that, these onions are not produced in Ghana, we travel to get them from Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso so the transport cost is high siad the seller. And I was like, how isnthis possible in Ghana. Not only this one, have you reaslised that the price of bread has also increased? Thisis simply because, Ghana imports common wheat and flour from other countries and when the Dollar gains value, the cedi suffers. Can’t we plant and harvest grains in Ghana. Which leader is supposed to tackle this issue. I must confess that they are all aware but they will never set in due to their selfish gains. What should you do as a citizen?
Firstly, to me, a good citizen is the one who always hopes for the best and through this do the best to help his or her country. I will prefer we go back to our old days. It seems this new way of life is not helping, we can’t keep on importing everything even though no country can develop in isolation. I will suggest we feed our selves. Plant something at your backyard, develop a small garden in your house and if possible, enter into full time farming alongside you white colar job, trust me we can do this. I think if anything should go up in terms of prices, it shouldn’t be our local foods.
Secondly, limit the intake of foreign foods. Fornones in our lives, lets reduce purchasing imported foods, it will reduce the presure on the cedinin the international market. The higher we demand the Dollar, the tougher our cedi suffers depreciation.
Third. Provide constructive criticism. Do not join the cue to protesting just because people are doing it. What is the way forward from your perspective? Bring out ideas andntry as much as possible to practice somebof them in your lives. Let corruption not lead you in your homes and workplaces else, your kid and the younger generation will learn from it.
Lets all unite and hold our hands for the best. Support the leader with your words and spirit and wholly, we can build this country. Thank you.
